Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. (2Cor.10:5)
Understanding the truth of the Scripture in 2Cor.10:5, would help you so greatly to know that your outward action to your wife and children is influenced by the thought you have allowed to set in your heart. This means that whatever knowledge you allow to take preeminence in your heart will determine how you relate, response and react to your wife and children. This is why as the head of your family and the shepherd over the sheep of God in your custody, you must intentionally and deliberately cast down imaginations in your mind that are contrary to the truth of God’s word. And very importantly, you must daily bring every thought to the obedience of Jesus Christ.
I recall what happened some years back when I was driving my child to school. After driving few meters out of the house, my daughter realized that her mum, my wife did not include the material the school had asked for school project. Earlier, the school had informed parents to get materials for their children for the project and it was part of the term’s assessment. I had made effort to get the material, although stressful and not convenient. So, you can imagine how angry I felt when I realized that it was not included in her school bag. Suddenly and right inside the car with my daughter, so many thoughts ran through my mind toward my wife-anger, frustration. But within me I had to put those negative thoughts in check by not speaking words that may make their mother appear unserious or uninterested in their education. Later, I called my wife to find out what happened, and she explained to me what had happened and assured me that we could still submit the material for the project the following week.
As the head of the family, you must continue to work on your emotions to bring it under control. A lot of husbands have allowed their emotions to overrun their spiritual sensibility thereby making them act in ways that are contrary to God’s expectations. There are many imaginations that come to play in your heart when your wife or children offend you-thought of revenge, denial, and withdrawal of your goodwill, bitterness and much more. But as the spiritual leader of your family and the shepherd of your wife and children, you must resist any thought that does not agree with God’s commandments. And you do this by walking in the Spirit. The Scriptures say he that walks in the Spirit shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Gal.5:16). And you walk in the Spirit when you allow the knowledge of God to gain deep roots in your heart, through your continued interaction with Him in prayers, fasting, word study and meditation. When you grow to have your flesh and emotions under control, you will wear a crown of glory. In Heb.2:7, Scriptures say thou crownest him with glory and honour (Heb.2:7). Husbands, you have everything to gain-spiritual, mental and physical-when you bring every thought to the obedience of Jesus Christ because that is what makes you function as the good and godly man, husband and father to your wife and children.
SPIRIRUAL EXERCISE
• Father, in the Name of Jesus and by Your Spirit, empower me with supernatural power to overcome the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life.
• Father, in the Name of Jesus and by Your blood, give me victory over every thought contrary to Your will for my wife and children.
• Father, in the Name of Jesus and by Your Spirit, empower me to continue to obey You in all things and at all times.
FAITH CONFESSION
I bring every thought and knowledge into captivity and to the obedience of Jesus Christ because that is what builds me up to become the good and godly husbandman to my wife and children in Jesus name. Amen.
