Main Scriptures: Is.6:1-2
More Scriptures: Jn.10:17, Jn.13:37, Heb.6:18
Any husband who wants to become the good and godly husbandman must of necessity lay down his life at the feet of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the godly husbandman. That means total surrendering of who you are and what you have. Interestingly, you have the power of choice either to surrender or not to Jesus Christ. For instance, let us consider the things that you must intentionally lay at the feet of Jesus as you lead your wife and children.
As the head of your family, you can lay down at the feet of Jesus Christ, your pride, ego, bitterness, adultery, anger, envy, and many more of the fruits of the flesh. The Scripture tells us of a remarkable statement Jesus made in Jn.10:17. Jesus said, “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life that I might take it back (Jn.10:17)”. As the good shepherd overseeing the sheep (wife and children) of God in your custody, you have the power to lay down malice and take back kindness. You have the power to lay down self, for the sake of your sheep, so that they can enjoy all things that pertain to life and godliness. Anything that you cannot let go is a god in your life. And so long as you don’t get rid of this god, God cannot work in you, with you and through you to become a blessing to your wife and children.
You must understand that wrath is not profitable, don’t let it be a god. If you don’t let go bitterness, it becomes a god. Uncontrolled appetite you don’t let go will soon become a god. Just anything that wants to hinder you from functioning well in your office as the godly man, husband and father is a god, which you must resist. In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple (Is.6:1). Don’t believe the lie that there are offences committed by your wife and children that cannot be forgiven. It doesn’t matter what your wife and children may have done to you, there is the God-nature in You Whose grace is sufficient for you.
But how do I lay my life at the feet of my Master, Jesus Christ? Firstly, as the godly shepherd, you must make Jesus Christ, Your Lord and Personal Saviour. When He becomes the Lord over your life, your desire will always be to please Him. Secondly, you must ask the Lord to break you. To have a broken spirit means Jesus is increasing in you continually and you are decreasing daily. The Scripture says that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. When you learn to lay down those struggles at the feet of Jesus, He helps you become like Him to your wife and children. As a result of laying down your all to Jesus Christ, you earn the honour and respect of your sheep. You also become an example to other husbands.
Always remember that God has made you in His image and likeness (Gen.1:26-28). God also has provided Jesus Christ to you as an example of the godly husbandman. And if Jesus Christ, the Husband of the church lays it down, you can also be like Him.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, by Your Spirit, give me largeness of heart to love and forgive my wife and children lavishly.
- Father, by the blood of Jesus Christ, deliver me from the power of pride and a haughty spirit.
- Father, by Your Spirit, I decrease so that You may increase in my life.
FAITH CONFESSION
I lay my life at the feet of Jesus Christ and I am transformed to become like Him to my wife and children and as a good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
