Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil, CLEAVE TO THAT WHICH IS GOOD. Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love, in honour preferring one another.
As the head of your family, you must not cleave to evil concerning your wife and children no matter what they may have done, rather you must cleave to good sides of your wife and children. To cleave to good is to stick close to something positive. Have you seen how firmly fixed a paper is to a gum? They cleave so well that it will require some effort to separate them. This is what happens when you cleave to what is evil. When you cleave to what is evil, it affects the way you perceive your wife and children. It takes your focus away from them. It makes you to see only the bad side of your wife and children, even when they exhibit good attitudes. In Am.5:15, the word of God says that “hate the evil, and live the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph” (Amos 5:15). You must make conscious determination to stick to only those good aspects of your wife and children.
But how do I cleave to what is good as the head of the family? In verse 18 of Rom.12, God’s word says, “live peaceably with all men”. First, you must learn to be peaceable with your wife and children. This does not mean that you cannot be upset sometime when your wife or children are in the wrong. Instead, what this means is that you do not allow the disagreement that you have with your wife and children to become a hindrance to living in peace with them. Another thing that you can also do is to learn how not to take revenge against your wife and children. It is ungodly. It is not part of the mandate God has given to you as the spiritual leader of your home. When you allow yourself to be overtaken by revenge, it will lead to destruction and bitterness. So, when your sheep offend you and they are hungry, please feed them. If they are thirsty give them water to drink (Rom.12:20). Your headship places on you a huge responsibility to continue to do what is right irrespective of the attitude and shortcomings of your wife and children. So, no matter what your wife and children may have done wrong to you or any other person, please cleave to what is GOOD because it is a profitable and it makes you the good and godly husbandman.
