Main Scriptures: Gen.2:15-17
More Scriptures: Mal.2:14, Eph.5:22, 1Pt.3:7
And the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. (Gen.2:15-17)
Yesterday, the grace and help of the Person of the Holy Spirit, we understood the importance of exercising diligent care over God’s assets in our custody. That is your wife and children. We also learnt that as the husbandman and the custodian of God’s asset, you and I will give account to God, who made the head and leader. We also discovered some practical steps to take to enable us to remain responsible caretaker of God’s assets-your wife, children and sheepfold.
Today, I want us to consider another step to take. It is the attitude of humility. Humility is a spirit from God. It is the empowerment you receive from God that enables you to accept your mistakes, turn away from it and make positive changes for the better. It is that attitude that makes you recognize that you can be corrected by your wife, children and those around you. It is true that you are the authority in your home. It is also true that you are the head of your family. However, you must appreciate the truth that you have a higher authority in Jesus Christ. That is, you are also a man under authority.
A life of humility will give you access to the wisdom of God that will enable you to exercise care over your wife and children and treat them with respect. Humility also helps you to follow the instructions of God delightsomely, whether or not it makes sense. A lot of the time, the instructions God gives to you, particularly when it comes to your relationship with your wife and children, may not make logical sense. For example, take the instruction in Colossians chapter 3 and verse 19. It says, “husband love your wife and be not bitter against her. Now, how can you love your wife and not be bitter against her when she has just disrespected or abused you. Nevertheless, the word of God says, don’t be bitter against her but love her. It takes a heart of humility to obey this instruction. The word of God is the guide you need to exercise diligent care in handling and treatment of your wife and children. Love it, read, meditate on it and act on it!
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to turn my sheep in the direction that pleases You.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me with the Spirit of humility and help me to overcome bitterness.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be a living example to my wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
I give the word of God attention and allow it to guide my conduct and relationship with my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen and amen.
