The story in 1st Kings chapter 3 was about king Solomon. Shortly, after the death of his father, David, God enthroned him as the king. Solomon offered a great sacrifice to God, God appeared to him in a dream. God asked Solomon what he would need from Him. Solomon replied that he needed wisdom to be able to lead the people God had committed into his hands. And God gave him wisdom because it is the principal thing every good and godly shepherd requires to lead his sheep.
And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father, and I am but a little child. I know not how to go out or come in. and thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this thy great a people? 1Kgs.3:7-9
Now, as the head of your family, your desire to provide for your household, food, clothing education, shelter, and health care is good and godly. But your need to operate in divine wisdom is much more important. It is the principal thing. The word of God says so. Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding (Pro.4:7). You need a large dose of the wisdom of God to lead your wife all the days of your marital journeys. Many husbands have lost their wife whom they have been married to for several years to divorce. Many more have lost their children to satan, sin and the world, as soon as the children become adults. It does not matter how long you have been the husbandman, if you do not continue to equip yourself with the wisdom of God, you will lose your sheepfold. Satan is going about looking for the sheepfold he will destroy. Only the wisdom of God can dislodge the wiles of the devil.
But why do I need the wisdom of God to lead my wife and children and how do I get it? The Scripture says that by wisdom the world was framed by the word of God (Pro.3:19). Whatever positive attitude you desire to see in the lives of your wife and children can be framed by the wisdom of God. It is the wisdom of God that will make you to intercede for your wife and children rather than complain and murmur (Gal.4:19). It is also the wisdom of God that will make you control the words you speak in the direction of your wife and children when they hurt you. And you get this wisdom by asking the Lord to give you by His Spirit. If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally and it shall be given to him (Jas.1:5). The wisdom of God is your greatest need. Seek it, love it and live it.
