Let us begin today’s teaching by examining few questions that I want you to answer from the book of Psalms chapter 92 and verses 7-12. Do you know what it means to flourish as the godly husbandman? Do you think that there is a reward for doing the right thing from the Word of God to your wife and children?
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree, he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon (Ps.92:7-12)
The word of God says that the righteous shall flourish like a palm tree. Now, as the head of your family and the priest over your wife and children, how do I become a righteous husbandman? You become the righteous husbandman by doing what God commands you to do to your wife and children. So, what are some of the commandments that God has given to me. Firstly, God commands you to love your wife as He loves you. Husbands love thy wife as Christ has loved the church and gave Himself for it (Eph.5:25). And do you know what it means to love your wife as Christ has loved the church? It means you must be patient with your wife; you do not envy her success; you do not make her feel inferior; you do not rejoice when she fails or falls into error; you are not just thinking about yourself but you are thinking much more about her and her well-being; you do not think to hurt her rather you have control over your emotions; you believe her and God’s promises for her life; you welcome her suggestions, advice and correction when she makes such known to you, and you amend your ways; you pray for her in your closet that Christ will be formed in her and that she will come to the fullness of her place in Jesus Christ (1Cor.13:4-7, Eph.1:18-19, Gal.4:19).
God also commands you to nurture your children. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instructions of the Lord (Eph.6:4) ESV. What does it mean to bring up your children in the discipline and instructions of the Lord? It means that you, the father, make out time to teach your children the will of God for them when it comes to relationship with the opposite sex, their finances, health, career, business, character and eternity. You must understand that your children are from your loins. They are your seeds. Your wife only receives the seed like the earth would a seed during planting. She incubates it until she is delivered of a child. So, the responsibility of imparting your children with the right values rest, principally with you. Your children must see the life of Jesus reflected in your word and conduct because God will hold you accountable both for their success and failure (Gen.18:19, 1Sam.3:13). And when you obey God’s commandments, you will enjoy peace and quietness, health and vitality, renewal of strength and mind and favour from God.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to walk in truth and righteousness toward my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me to enjoy my wife and children and help me to flourish as the godly man, husband and father.
- Father in the Name of Jesus, fill me with the fullness of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
FAITH CONFESSION
I am committed to think, do and act on all the commandments of God as it concerns my relationship with my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
