Main Scriptures: 1Tim.4:6-8
More Scriptures: Phil.4:8, Matt.5:14, Ps.1:1
Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come (1Tim.4:7-8) NLT
If you have ever attended a typical wedding event in Nigeria, particularly among the Yoruba speaking tribe, one thing that stands out is the collection of head gears you will find on the heads of women. You are likely to see different shades, shapes and colours of head gears. Some spend huge amount of money to acquire these head gears. But why would these women go all out to do this? It is simply because that is their pride, glory and crown. It defines who they are and the value they place on their person. Now, this is exactly what the Person of the Holy Spirit wants you to do from our main text. He wants you to place a high premium on godliness and holiness. He wants you to put on the head gear of righteousness. He wants you to train your life to do what is right to your wife and children and the world around you.
Let your light so shine before men that they may glorify God you Father…. (Matt.5:14-16). The will of God for you is to reflect His righteousness in your heart, words and conduct towards all men, beginning with your sheep. He wants you to live a life that your wife and children would be proud to identify with. That is your heritage. But how do I put on the head gear of righteousness?
You do that by training yourself in word search, word meditation, effective prayer life, and exercise your faith in God to act right, irrespective of the cost or inconvenience (Jos.1:6-8). Do what is right from the word of God to your wife and children and the people around you, even if it is unpopular, because standing for godliness is profitable. It benefits you both in this life and in the life to come. In Ps.1, see what the word of God says. Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or stand around with sinners or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither and they prosper in all they do (Ps.1:1-3) NLT.
So, stand up and walk righteously because righteousness exalts sin is a reproach.
