Bible Texts: Mal.2:14-15, Pro.5:18, Pro.2:17, Ecc.4:9-12, 1Pet.3:7-9, 1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.5:25, Jn.3:16, Gal.4:19
Let me begin today’s teaching by addressing a fundamental biblical truth about who your wife is, not as the world or man thinks but as God thinks. If you and I can understand this truth, it will help us to appreciate who our wife is and motivate us to become like Jesus Christ to her in every way possible.
“Your wife is your COVENANT PARTNER OF GRACE”.
Yet ye say, wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously, yet is she thy companion, and THE WIFE OF THY COVENANT. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth (Mal.2:14-15).
It matters less how you feel and regardless of the negative vibes from your wife, God says that she is your covenant partner. That is who she is to you and that is how God sees her in your relationship with her.
As the good and godly husbandman, God did not create you to be an island? He created you to have fellowship with Him and with His treasures, that is your wife and children. God said, “it is not good for man to be alone, I will make for him a helpmeet” (Gen.2:17-18). God was intentional in creating the need for you to have a partner, so do not see your wife as a necessary evil as the world thinks or believe. Even God, as great as He is, is not alone. He has the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Person of the Holy Spirit. Because God appreciates partnership and you are created in His image and likeness, you have a partner in your wife. Your wife remains your first and most important partner because of the fact that both of you have become one flesh (Matt.19:1-8). It is very important that you also know that your partnership with your wife is a covenant, sealed by the power of God. So, jealously protect the partnership.
But why is my wife my covenant partner of grace? Partnering with your wife is the quickest route to overcoming the obstacles and traps of life, whether it is barrenness, financial emptiness, evil forces, unruly children or extended family crises. One shall chase one thousand, two shall put ten thousand to flight (Ecc.4:8). When you partner with your wife, it provides you with a safety net of strength and comfort. Therefore, you must rekindle your friendship with your wife. Make her your best friend. Don’t deal with her wickedly but in knowledge and wisdom (1Pet.3:7). Always remember that she is your project and you will present her before God according to Ephesians 5:20-27.
But for you to see her as your covenant partner, you must change your perspective of who she is by the word of God. In Jeremiah chapter 1 and verses 10 and 11, God asked Jeremiah what he can see. And until Jeremiah’s changed his perspective of who he was, he could not do much for himself and God. Your wife is fearfully and wonderfully made. You must honour and treat her with respect at home and outside the house.
To help your wife fit in into her role as your covenant partner, you have the following spiritual responsibilities after the order of Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman. Firstly, you must pray for her often especially in those areas of her life where she needs help (Gal.4:19, Lk.18:1). Secondly, you must serve her with your time, body and finances and be transparent (Matt.6:22, 1Cor.7:1-10, 1Tim.5:7-8). Finally, you must be willing to teach her, be kind and faithful to her (1Tim.3:2-5). When you do these things, then you would have succeeded in making her your covenant partner of grace and enjoy the blessings of two are better than one.
Spiritual exercise:
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to treat my wife as a vessel of honour.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to respect my wife.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to be truthful to my wife in all things.
Faith confession:
I renew my commitment to be faithful, loyal and honest to my wife because that is how I can make her my covenant partner and be fit to be called the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
