Yesterday, we consider that the husbandman who wants to be good and godly must choose the path of honour and be honourable in all things and to all people. We concluded that what makes the husbandman good and godly is when he refuses to choose the path of least resistance.
Let us continue from where we stopped yesterday and consider another virtue. And it is from Joshua chapter 24.
NOW FEAR THE LORD AND SERVE HIM WITH ALL FAITHFULNESS. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshipped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods of your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSEHOLD WE WILL SERVE THE LORD (Jos.24:14-15) NIV.
The second virtue is choosing to obey God rather than man. It is giving God first place in the choices you make and the decision you take. As the husbandman, God wants you to serve Him through Jesus Christ, faithfully. God wants you to lead your wife and children to serve Him. God wants you and your wife and children to live godly life. God wants you to be like Him to your wife, children and in the market places of life. God wants your lifestyle and choices to be influenced by His word. God wants you to rule your family kingdom with the principles of the word of God rather the rudiments of the world.
As the good and godly husbandman, you have the mandate to lead your life, wife and children in the service of God by teaching them the word of God, guiding them through the word of God, praying them into the word of God and becoming the example of Jesus Christ to them. Thank God for your pastor. Thank God for the teachers. But you must take responsibility to lead as Joshua did. He said, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord”.
You must understand that you will always be confronted with opportunities to either walk and obey God or obey the dictates of your flesh and the traditions of men. But what makes you different from the average husbandman is your ability to serve God and His interest rather than man. If you must be like a god to your wife and children, you must be prepared to be influenced by God’s word and commandments.
When you give God the first place in your life and allow Him and His word to be the basis for the decisions you take in your life and the choices you make as well as how you relate with your wife and children, then you qualify to be called the good and godly husbandman.
Then the people answered “far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods….we too will serve the Lord because he is our God (Jos.24:16,18). Your value as the leader is that you have your wife and children are following you.
Walk in the fear of the Lord, serve Him and obey all His commandments because that is what makes you the good and godly husbandman.
