WHAT MAKES YOU THE GODLY HUSBANDMAN (3)

Spread the love

Bible Texts: Jos.24:14-15, Jer.31:32, 1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.6:4, 1Tim.3:2-5, Lk.10:19, Eph.5:25, Lk.18:1, Mk.9:27-29, 1Pet.3:7, Ps.24:1-3, 1Thess.5:8, Jer.35:6

Yesterday, by the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit, we discovered that one of the virtues that make the husbandman good and godly is leading his life and the lives of his wife and children in the way of the Lord. His ability to teach God’s word to his wife and children, guide and instruct them through the word and also live the word (Jos.24:10, 1Tim.3:2-5).

Another virtue that makes the husbandman good and godly is self control or better still self discipline. Did you know that your emotions, sexual appetite, anger are capable of leading you into trouble if you do not know how to control it? This is so important for you and me, that are striving to becoming good and godly husbandmen.

Many husbandmen have lost their lives and destinies to satan, sin and the world because they could not control their emotions, appetite and desires. Many husbandmen have not only sacrificed either their wife or children for money, they have also sold their right to long life and ability to bear children to the god of this world, satan because of power. A lot more are struggling with the shame and pain of sexually transmitted diseases because they did not control their sexual appetite. Many also have beaten their wives or children, leading to their death because they couldn’t control their anger. These attributes are not what makes you the good and godly husbandman.

As the husbandman, God wants you to have control over your appetite and emotions even in the face of provocation either from your wife and children or from outsiders. This is why the Word of God admonishes us to “put your bodies under….”. You cannot avoid your wife or children offending you because they are not perfect. It is how you respond to their negative attitude that is very important. The Scripture tells us that “if God will mark iniquity, who shall stand?…..”. But despite the failures of man, God still loves us and gave us His best, Jesus Christ, as a ransom for our lost souls. So, your best to your wife and children is not found in holding bitterness against them or beating them up or even having extra-marital affair. Your best is in holding on to those godly ideals even when it doesn’t seem convenient and make sense.

But how do I bring my body under and exercise self control? The first is for you to acknowledge the Person of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. This is fellowship (Jn.3:3-5). The second is for you to be conscious that you have the mind of Christ. There is something powerful about your mind. It is the seat of decision. That is why the Bible warns us to “guard our minds with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life….” The urge to commit sexual immorality, unable to control your appetite for food, money, position and power, to be bitter against your wife and children, or have bad will toward them, takes its root in your mind. If what occupies your mind is ungodliness, you will manifest ungodliness. Hence, you must allow the love of Christ to be shed abroad in your heart (Rom.5:5).

For you to be in command of your emotions and appetite and bring it under control, you must renew your mind with the Word of God, daily (Rom.12:1-3). You must make out time to study your Bible, and read or listen to other anointed books. You must engage your prayer altar for power so that your life can be controlled by the Spirit of God and not your flesh (Mk.9:29).

If you can control your emotions and appetite, you will manifest the character that befits your position as the good and godly husbandman.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to bring my emotions and appetite under control.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, let the Spirit of Your word rule my heart, mind, soul and body.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me not to seek for alternatives outside Your Word.

FAITH CONFESSION

I have the mind of Christ, I born of God and by this truth, I have complete control over my emotions and appetite because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
