Let’s begin today’s teaching by quoting the words of Jesus Christ.
If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth (Mk.9:23).
What does this tell you and I as husbands? It tells us we can love our wife as Christ has loved the Church and gave Himself to it (Eph.5:25). You and I can love our wife and not be bitter against her (Col.3:19). It also means that if we believe enough, we can treat our wife with respect, honour and dignity, according to knowledge of whom God has made them (1Pet.3:7-9). It means that you and I can be patient, kind, compassionate, be a burden bearer, forgiving and merciful to them (1Cor.13:4-8, Rom.5:5).
You can stop the noises of divorce and bitterness. You can stop the attacks of satan, sin and the world that threatens the peace and harmony between you and your wife. You can command a new day and a new dawn of friendship, trust, faithfulness, partnership, companionship and joy between you and your wife. These are possible if you can dare to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth (Rom.10:10).
As the husband to your wife, God, through the grace of your covenant of marriage to her, has empowered you to fulfill your ministry as the good and godly husband. Your assignment to your wife is well defined in the Bible. And Jesus Christ represents the perfect example of the good and godly husband. Everything action and step you want to take towards becoming the godly husband to your wife is in Jesus Christ. If you can invest your time to study His life as the Bridegroom and believe you can be like Him, then you will see improvement in your relationship between you and your wife.
But you must watch out for these landmines and traps that satan, sin and the world will set and continues to set up so that the husband will fail and fall.
Firstly, you must mind the company you keep. If you keep company of husbands who cheat and engage in extramarital affairs and also abuse their spouse physically, emotionally and mentally, it is just a matter of time, you will attempt to do the same to your wife. The Scripture says this and I want you to meditate on it deeply. Bad company corrupts good manners (1Cor.15:33).
Secondly, you must be careful the philosophies that you believe in. There are all kinds of human ideologies and philosophies from the world system about the personality of the husband. For instance, they teach that the husband is created to be unfaithful to one wife. Some even teach that the wife is sub-human to her husband and so must be treated as an insignificant person. But God’s word, which is the truth you must believe and act on says this. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church (Eph.5:28-29).
Your wife is made for your enjoyment. God sent her to you as your helper (Gen.2:18). Therefore, fulfill your ministry as the good and godly husband, working with God through Jesus Christ to make her complement you as your companion and the wife of your covenant (Mal.2:14).
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to fulfill my calling as the good and godly husband.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me the wisdom to accept responsibility for my growing up as the husband.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make my life an acceptable and living sacrifice to You as the good and godly husband.
FAITH CONFESSION
I am empowered by God to love my wife as Christ has loved the church and gave Himself to it because that is what makes me the good and godly husband, in Jesus name. Amen.
