Bible Texts: 1Chro.4:8-10, Ac.14:15, Jas.5:17, 1Kgs.17:1, Gal.4:19, Matt.7:7, Rev.12:10, Mk.9:29, Jer.33:3, Ps.39:13, Heb.11:6, Philp.2:13
If there is a husbandman to pray, there is a God that answers. If you can travail on your knees, you will prevail on your feet. Today, I want us to consider the power of prayer and we will be studying the husbandman, Jabez in 1st Chronicles chapter 4 and verses 8 to 10. The prayer of Jabez is total. It covers every area of the husbandman. And because he prevailed in prayers, you and I can also be victorious when we engage the incredible power of effectual fervent prayer.
Jabez was a man who had unfavourable circumstances around his life and family. His mother gave birth to him in sorrow. His name and that of his family was sorrow. And he lived this way for a long time. But one day, he reacted to his negative identity. He desired a change. He wanted to move his family forward just the same way you have been longing to make the needed positive changes in your life and the lives of your wife and children. So, he prayed.
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. AND GOD GRANTED HIM THAT WHICH HE REQUESTED. Praise God! God answered him and made him more honourable than his brethren and his family name changed (1Chro.4:8-10)
From our Bible passage in 1st Chro.4:8-10, the major weapon Jabez used in moving his life and family forward was prayer-effectual fervent prayer (Jas.5:16). Jabez’s prayer to God terminated every form of stagnation, struggle, shame, reproach, lack and want in his life and family.
Now when you consider the enormous responsibilities of the godly husbandman, you cannot deny the truth that you need the help of God to succeed (Jn.15:5, Jer.33:3, Ps.34:5). You need supernatural intervention to be free from spells and enchantment, from every form of ungodliness, from barrenness, lack and want, struggles, slow or no progress, addictions, failures, sickness and diseases.
Prayer changes everything and anything. Prayer recreates the destiny of any husbandman who dares to engage it, notwithstanding the challenges. Yours may be financial dryness. It may even be stagnation in your marriage life or addiction to drugs or unhealthy habits. It may even be consistent quarrels with your wife and children. Whatever the challenges may be the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous will always prevail (Jas.5:16). You can prevail by winning on your knees.
But faith in God and His word is the principal thing you require to get your prayers answered. He that must come to God must first believe that He is and He is the rewarded of them that diligently seek Him (Heb.11:6). Your fervent and faith-filled prayer brings the needed changes you crave for in your life and the lives of your wife and children just as Jabez did.
Pray without ceasing because prayers will not hurt you but will make a way for you, your wife, children and home.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to pray like Jabez did for the sake of my life, wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with the spirit of grace and supplication.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, hear me when I call and change the story of my life, wife and children for the better.
FAITH CONFESSION
I tarry on my knees in prayers in order for me to win on my feet and in all my pursuits because that is what empowers me to prevail and succeed in my covenant responsibilities as the good and godly man, husband and father in Jesus name. Amen.
