THE FATHER’S DISCIPLINE

Spread the love

Bible Texts: 1Kgs.1:5-6, Eph.6:4, Pro.29:15, Pro.13:24, Deut.6:7-10, 1Sam.8:1-7, 1Sam.3:12-13, Pro.19:18, Pro.23:13-14

Among the many responsibilities the good and godly husbandman has towards his children is to discipline them in the fear and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph.6:4). Sadly many husbandmen have failed in this role, resulting in the increasing number of entitled, ungrateful and badly behaved children. It is for this reason that we shall be considering the study of 1st Kings Chapter 1.

About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, I will make myself king. So, he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him. Now his father, king David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking…(1Kg.1:5-6) NLT

Adonijah, the son of David was a child left to himself-he had no boundaries and was not disciplined when he did what was wrong. He was overindulged by his father, David, because amongst other things he was from a very wealthy home. The Scripture says, “his father, king David HAD NEVER disciplined him at any time (1Kgs.1:6). And because he was not disciplined, he grew to become a rebellious child who organized chariots and charioteers to forcefully take over the throne of his father. However, he did not succeed and he died ingloriously and shamefully.

As the good and godly husbandman, you must be very careful not to be carried away by this modern style of fatherhood, where the child cannot be disciplined or corrected. It has become so sad that fathers are afraid to confront their children when they become unruly and cross the line. And sadly many have ended up in shame and embarrassment. It is important for you to understand that the word of God, though old, is valid for today’s needs.

A child that is left to himself shall bring shame (Pro.29:15)

You do not love your child or children when you indulge their irresponsible behaviours. Rather you are destroying their destinies. Painfully, you will be the victim. You may not be hard physically on your children, but you must be firm by reinforcing the principles of the word of God and ensuring that they obey them faithfully and joyfully (Gal.4:19). You must draw the lines that they must never cross. And when they do cross the line, you must confront, correct and guide them in love, not minding the look on their faces (Pro.23:13-14).

Your children are the heritage and gifts from God. God commands you to nurture them in the way and admonition of the Lord (Deut.6:1-8, Eph.6:4). Therefore, awake from your slumber and be the good and godly influence your children need because they are your bridge that connects your today with your tomorrow.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be bold to correct my children when they are wrong.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, grant me wisdom and teach me how to nurture, guide, motivate and admonish my children in Your ways.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, put the spirit of the fear of God into the hearts of my children and help them to walk in Your ways, within and without.

FAITH CONFESSION

I receive divine power and wisdom to confront, correct, nurture, admonish, guide and motivate my children in the ways of Jesus Christ because that is the responsibility I have towards them as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus Name. Amen.
