Bible Texts: Philp.2:6-7, Gen.1:28, Rom.12:15, 1Cor.15:10, Ps.139:14, Job 29:15, Gen.2:5, Gen.1:26-28, Jn.10:1-3, Rom.8:1, Jos.1:3-8, Jn.5:39, 2Tim.2:15
Yesterday, by the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit, you and I understood that there are two strong adversaries that are in us that we must confront if we must make our calling as the husbandman good and godly. And the first is low self esteem, which not only makes the husbandman fearful, but also makes him unable to act in faith, boldness and courage as the man, husband and father.
Today, let us explore the second enemy. It is superiority complex. This enemy makes you overestimate yourself. It makes you think you are better than everybody and leads you to be arrogant and proud. It makes you too high to listen to counsel, correction and rebuke. This enemy makes you feel you are too big to do small things for your wife and children. It makes you have the master-slave mentality towards your wife and children. This is the enemy in you that you must subdue in your walk as the good and godly husbandman.
Now, listen to Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman.
I am from above, you came from the earth…..(Jn.8:23)
Jesus knew His worth. He is conscious of His identity but He did not rub it on the faces of His disciples. He recognizes that whatever He becomes is as result of the help of His heavenly Father, hence He remained humbled even to the Cross (Philp.2:6-7). And this motivates Him to serve His disciples with humility of heart.
Apostle Paul further helped you and I to understand this truth when he declared,
I am what I am by the grace of God……(1Cor.15:10)
As the head of the family, you must be very careful of this enemy. A lot of husbandmen have gone astray because of this enemy. They refuse to learn to counsel, take corrections and make amends because they are always right in their own eyes while every other person is wrong. As the good and godly shepherd, you must learn to listen. Your wife and children must be able to access you to offer you advice, corrections and admonition.
What else does this enemy do to the husbandman? This enemy called superiority complex makes you uncomfortable when others are making progress because you think you are the only one who must succeed. This enemy leads you to develop bad will towards your wife and children, and others. This enemy makes you not to see anything good in others because you are afraid they will rise above you.
So, how do I deal with this enemy?
Firstly, you must walk in the consciousness of who you, where you are from and what you are worth from the word of God, knowing that you are what you are by the grace of God (1Cor.15:10). Secondly, you must seek and continue to seek to know and rediscover your identity in Jesus Christ so that you do not get lost in the midst of arrogance and pride and false estimation of yourself. Thirdly, you must engage the weapon of prayer and fasting to overcome the tendencies to become egoistic, proud and arrogance (Mk.9:29). Finally, you must remain small in the eyes of God by giving glory to God in your thoughts, words and actions.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for over-estimating myself and living a life of pride and arrogance.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, open my eyes to discover my worth in Your word and help me live by it.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be humble in heart, words and actions as the man, husband and father, bringing honour and glory to Your name and to my family.
FAITH CONFESSION
I am what I am by the grace of God and I walk in the reality of who God says I am, where He says I am from and what He says I am worth because that is my heritage as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
