Until you leave your past, your present and future is not in view. That is the word of the Lord for a husband reading this devotional. Your wife may have hurt you so badly. She may have betrayed and dishonoured you in more ways than you could ever imagine. Your children may have disappointed you despite all your investment in them. You may have concluded that your flock is not redeemable. But there is hope for you.
The story in our main Scripture today is a reflection of how insensitive man can be. Abraham, the husband of Sarah, was betrayed by his nephew, Lot. So, it not surprising if your wife or children hurt you. After Lot became rich because of the influence of Abraham, fight broke out between Abraham’s servants and Lot’s. They fought over space. And when the disagreement did not seem to abate, Abraham, the head offered Lot the first right of refusal. His nephew took the choicest part of the land and left Abraham with the remnant. But something divine happened. The Lord God Almighty asked Abraham to look……. . And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, lift up now thine eyes and look from the place where thou art northward, southward and eastward and westward (Gen.13:14).
So what happened was that Abraham looked beyond the disappointments, betrayals and disrespect of his nephew, Lot. He forgave him and walked in love toward him. He actually prayed for him and came to his rescue. When God wanted to destroy the land of Sodom and Gomorrah where Lot lived, Abraham pleaded with God to spare the righteous, including Lot. This is the kind of mind God wants you to have. God wants you to see the failures of your flock as your opportunity to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ. God wants you to live beyond revenge. You must live above malice. You must live above bitterness and you must live above hatred. But for you to live above these fruits of the flesh, you must pray for the love of Christ to be spread abroad in your heart (Rom.5:5). You must be intentional in asking the Holy Spirit to fill your heart with righteous thoughts. You must give effect to your asking by acting the love of God toward your flock. You will always win sowing the seed of love into the lives of your sheep.
