Main Scriptures: James 4:5-8
More Scriptures: Ps.133:2, 1Pt.2:25, 1Pt.1:22
Do you think that the scripture saith in vain, the spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners and purify your hearts, ye double-minded. (Jas.4:5-8).
One of my mentors Dr. Mike Murdock said and I quote, “confront your problems today. What you refuse to master today will master you tomorrow. Remember, what you do habitually determines what you become permanently. Anything resisted is weakened”.
As the head of the family, you cannot deny the fact that there are some habits that you are struggling with that you have carried on from childhood or boyhood and now into adulthood. Sadly, some of these habits have become destructive to your health, emotion and even your relationship with your wife and children and the people around you. You must understand that bad habits are either learnt or inherited. In whatever ways you may have contracted these deadly habits, you can overcome them. A lot of husbands have not had a peaceful relationship with their children. Some have lost their wives and children because of destructive habits. As the spiritual leader of the home, you cannot sit down and assume that is how you were created or that is how God wants you to live. No! It is a lie from the pit of hell. God has made you the good shepherd and He wants you to be the godly man, husband and father to your sheep. The Man, Jesus Christ, whom you are representing to your wife and children, does not have destructive habits. In all His relationship with His sheep, He demonstrated godly habits that endeared His disciples to Him. Let me mention some of the destructive habits that you must deal with today and all the days of your life if you must be relevant and useful to your wife and children. These destructive habits include, anger, bitterness, envy, hatred, drunkenness, adultery, covetousness, greed, wife battering, lying, exaggeration, gluttony and distrust and such things that stains your headship as the leader of the home. You cannot continue to pretend that all is well with your attitude or habits. You must know that as the spiritual authority in your home, your habits are contagious and will rob-off on your wife and children (Ps.133:2). Why would you hold bitterness against your wife and children and allow it to destroy you? Why would you continue to eat recklessly and hurt your body? But why are these habits destructive to you as the head of the family? First, it disconnects you from God. Secondly, it affects your health negatively. Thirdly, it gives a wrong picture of the nature of God to your wife and children. Fourthly, you lose friendship with your wife and children. Fifthly, you are preparing your way to eternal damnation.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the power of destructive habits.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me by Your Spirit to overcome every power of the flesh and carnality.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, grant me exceeding grace to live over and above the flesh for Your glory.
FAITH CONFESSION Sin and the works of the flesh shall not have dominion over me again because I walk in the Spirit and I am destined to be the good and godly husband to my wife and children in Jesus name. Amen.
