The story at Cana is a very familiar one. It is the story of Jesus turning water into wine. It was the marriage ceremony of two important families. The guest of honour was the king of the city. During the wedding, the wine finished and they people wanted more. Jesus Christ also was at the event. And the host knew Jesus Christ and what He was capable of doing. So, they approached His mother to ask her Son, Jesus Christ to come to their help because they didn’t want to be put to shame. Jesus, heeded to their request and asked them to fill the water pots. He supernaturally turned the water into wine. The wine was sweeter than any wine served at the event.
What lesson can you, the head of your family and the shepherd of your sheep, learn from this story? There are two lessons. The first is that Jesus Christ filled the gap by supernaturally supplying the wine for the guests. You have been ordained by God to provide for the needs of your wife and children. You are in their lives to fill the gap. Your responsibility as the leader in your sheepfold is to satisfy the spiritual emotional, mental, financial and physical needs of your wife and children. You can do this by paying attention to their attitude, temperaments, conversations and relationships. And Deut.6:4-10, provides the strategy you can adopt. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thin house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down and when thou risest up (Deut.6:6-8). The second lesson is that the wine that Jesus Christ produced was the sweetest and the guest of honour acknowledged this truth. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that made wine and knew not whence it was, but the servant which drew the water knew, the governor of the feast called the bridegroom and saith, every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine and when men have well drunk then that which is worse but thou hast kept the good wine until now (Jn.2:9-10). You are not just a provider, you also add colour and joy to the lives of your wife and children. You are not in their lives to cause them misery, pain and regrets. Your children must not regret having you as their father nor should your wife have regretted having you as her husband. You are an ambassador of Christ. You represent Him to your sheep and in your sheepfold. If He added joy to His sheep, you also can. And one major way you can fulfill this mandate is by allowing the WORD OF GOD-THE BIBLE to be your final authority. The more of His word you have, the more you know of His will for your sheep and the better you act as the godly man, husband and father.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me obedient to Your word and all Your commandments.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from every evil manipulation hindering me from functioning as the godly husbandman.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to become a blessing to my sheep and not a burden.
FAITH CONFESSION
I am a blessing to my wife and children the same way Jesus Christ was at Cana because that is what makes me the good and godly husband in Jesus name. Amen.
