Main Scriptures: Neh.1:3-4
More Scriptures: Gal.4;19, Ezk.2:1, Dan.7:4
The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the citadel, that Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity and concerning Jerusalem. And they said to me, the survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down and its gates are burned with fire. So it was, when I heard these words that I sat down and wept and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. (Neh.1:1-4)
If you read the Scriptures above, it was about what Nehemiah did when his people were in great distress. His people were in pains and were reproached by their enemies. Their lives were broken and the people were discouraged. So, when the news of the discomforting situation got to Nehemiah, the leader, he was greatly displeased and he cried for many days. He fasted and prayed to God for divine intervention. And God heard him and brought solace to the people. That is what every great leader does. That is the demand of leadership. And that is what commands followership. That is what every shepherd and husband is ordained to do.
As the head of your family and the spiritual leader in your sheepfold, it is very important that you appreciate that you are not just a leader by heritage but by practical action. God positions you in the midst of your wife and children to help them come out of their pains, discomfort and reproach. It could be that the emotional walls of your sheep have broken down-being abused by their friends, afraid of what the future holds for them, discouraged that they may fail in the school work or career. It could also be that your wife is being mocked by her friends, family members and in-laws because she could not conceive and bear you a child. It may even be that your sheep are being mocked by people around them because they are struggling with some negative habits. Whatever the challenge may be with your wife and children, it is your prerogative to stand in the gap for them by praying for them and not laugh at them. You are to fast and pray for them because as the head of the family, one of your attributes is an intercessor. The Bible says so. My little children whom I travail in prayers until Christ is formed in you (Gal.4:19). Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of a good and godly husband admonished us to fast and pray if we want to see unusual deliverance (Mk.9:29). You must continue to make your life most impactful in the lives of your wife and children because that is what makes you a good and godly husband.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to keep interceding for my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to build my faith for exploits.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill me with compassion toward my wife and children and let it move me to pray for them.
FAITH CONFESSION I take my position as an intercessor to pray for my wife and children and ensure their freedom, healing and comfort because that is my responsibility as the head and that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen
