Yesterday the Holy Spirit opened our eyes to the need for us husbands, who have been ordained by God as spiritual leaders, to be in Christ.We learnt that our greatest heritage as heads of our families is have a deep and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman. Today, I want us to consider some of the benefits that we enjoy as godly shepherds when we have a robust fellowship with Jesus Christ.
As the husband and leader in the home, when you are in Jesus, He empowers you to behave and act like Him to your wife and children (Jn.15:7-8). The reason why you find it very difficult to do the will of God to your flock as the man, husband and father is because you have not allowed Jesus to gain root in your heart. For you to be in Him, you must be willing and ready to be completely sold out to Him and all He commands you to do. Secondly, when you allow Him to be the basis of your existence, He empowers you to bear spiritual fruits of gentleness, faithfulness, kindness and patience (Gal.5:21-22). Thirdly, He helps you to become a light and a shining example in the market places of life.
A lot of the husbands who claim to be born again Christian husbands, holding high positions in their churches have no personal testimonies of good works and good words at their places of work or among their business associates. They appear like light at home but are truly dark outside. This is not the right way to live. It is your deeper relationship with Jesus Christ that helps you to overcome the filthiness of the spirit and the flesh (2Cor.7:1).As the head of the family, you may have overcome adultery, wife battery, drinking of alcohol and stealing, and even lying, which is victory over the filthiness of the flesh. But have you overcome that of the spirit, which includes bitterness, anger, pride, envy and much more? Only your life in Christ connection can guarantee you absolutely freedom. In Rom.12:21, it says overcome evil with good. You cannot also help your sheep overcome the obvious weakness or failures in their lives if you are not in Christ. This is because you will act according to your flesh and not the Spirit of God. You will not even show mercy and kindness to them when they fail you. You are the representative of Jesus Christ to your wife and children. You are the true expression of His image in words and in deeds. You must take personal responsibility to continue to be in Christ. It is your greatest heritage as the good and godly husbandman.
SPIRITUAL EXRCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with a new zeal to love You will the whole of my life
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, let Your word increase in my life and take preeminence over all my decisions
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the power of pride and selfishness.
