PORTRAIT OF THE GODLY HUSBAND

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: 1Tim.3:1-7

More Scriptures: 1Tim.4:6, Eph.5:25, Col.3:19

If you have seen a portrait before, you would appreciate today’s topic. Now what is a portrait? A portrait is a picture of a person, place or thing. It tells you the entire story in summary. A portrait gives you an idea of an object. It presents an imagery of what the real thing really is. Now, to you as a husband, what is the portrait of a good and godly husband? First Timothy chapter 3 paints the portrait of a godly husband. This is what the Scriptures in 1Timothy chapter 3 and verses 1-7 say about you, who wants to be the godly husband.

He must be blameless and the husband of one wife. He must be vigilant. He must be sober and of good behavior. He must be very hospitable to his wife, children and outsiders. He must be willing to teach and be teachable. He must not give himself to drinking wine or alcohol. He must not be a troublemaker but a problem solver. He must not be a wife beater or child abuser and molester. He must not be greedy and covetous, leading him to easily compromise his integrity for material and financial gains. He rules his own family and household very well. He is knowledgeable and not ignorant about his flock, nurturing them in the way of the Lord. He is humble in his spirit and not proud and boastful because no husband who is proud and arrogant can amount to anything meaningful in his family kingdom. He must have a good report from his flock and from those outside.

In 1Timothy 4:6, the Scripture says, …..thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. You are a good minister of Jesus Christ. The Scripture says husband love thy wife as Christ has loved the church (Eph.5:25). So, you should love your flock the same way Jesus loves the church. And since Jesus has ascended to heaven and has handed over to you the mantle of leading your flock, He wants you to represent Him well in the lives of your flock. That is the will of God for you. But for you to be like the portrait the Scripture has painted in 1Tim.3, you must continually seek to know more about your inheritances as a husband from the word of God-Bible and not your tradition, culture or education. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. The Bible is your best portrait, so the more you give attention to the word and pray the truth of God’s word into your life, the more your thoughts, emotions, actions and conducts are sanctified. Consequently, this leads you to exercise yourself unto godliness (1Tim.4:7).

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, by the power in the blood of Jesus Christ, empower me to exercise myself unto godliness.
  • Father, by the power in the blood of Jesus Christ, empower me to overcome the mystery of iniquity.
  • Father, by Your Spirit, empower me to function as a good and godly husband

FAITH CONFESSION

I am a good and godly husband to my wife and children because it is my heritage in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

It is because of 1Tim3:1 – 7 (and the rest of the Bible) that proves to me that, the Bible is a proven map for one’s life.
