I am amazed how my Teacher, the Person of the Holy Spirit, teaches me on what to write regarding husbands. After I finished the previous day’s devotional, I stepped out to ease myself. While in the convenience, He began to reveal to me what banner a husband should have over his wife and children. He began with the song we sing at Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship. It goes like this, “His banner over us is love. His banner over us is love. He’s brought us into His banqueting hall, and His banner over is love……”.
As the head of your family and the spiritual leader over the sheep of God in your care, the banner God wants you to have is love. The love of God that covers the multitude of sin and constrains you from hurting your wife and children. And this banner is demonstrated in the love that Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the godly husband, showed to the church. So, if the banner of Jesus Christ, whom you represent, over you and I as husbands is love, what type of banner have you raised over your flock?
This is extremely critical to your functioning as the head of your family. It is the banner that you raise over your wife and children which determines what is released over them. If you raise the banner of love over your sheep, you will attract all the benefits of love. If you raise the banner of hatred and bitterness, you will attract war, depression and frustration. So, the type of banner you raise over your wife and children has a lot to do with how they will end in life and in their relationship with the outside world.
But what does it mean to raise the banner of love over your flock as a shepherd and mentor? First, it means promoting the love of Christ among your sheep and sheepfold. The Scripture in Gal.5:19-23 gives a classic example of what the love of Christ represents. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Gal.5:22). Secondly, it means praying for the will of God to be established in the lives of your wife and children. The Bible tells us that Apostle Paul travailed in prayer until Christ is formed in the lives of the people he was leading. Praying the will of God for your flock is guiding them into the plans and purposes of God. Thirdly, it means declaring the counsel of God over their lives, notwithstanding the unfavourable circumstances around them. In Rom. 10:10, the word of God says that, that with the heart man believes but with the heart confession is made unto salvation. And in Proverbs, the Bible tells us that the power of life and death is in the tongue. Lift His banner of love over your wife and children because that is what counts to God, who made you the head.
