Main Scripture: 2Cor.13:7-8
More Scriptures: Ps.119:105, Jn.1:5, Gen.2:14
One of the struggles many husbandmen go through is coming to agree with what the word of God says about who they are and what God expects from them. A lot of husbands would rather choose the traditions of their village and the culture of their town in determining what they will or will not do. This is why we have few husbands that are living out the very life of Christ on their family fold. Now I pray to God that ye do no evil not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. For we can do nothing against the truth but for the truth (2Cor.13:7-8).
As a husband and the head of your family, you must understand that the constitution that guides your office-conduct, utterances, relationships, finances, and expectations -is the Bible. From the beginning when God created the office of the husbandman (Gen.2:14-18), He had designed great plans for you. So, also if you study the Bible, you will read about husbands that excelled as good and godly shepherds, and by their testimonies, pleased the Lord. And according to Scriptures, they are given to us as examples. You must live above the tendencies of the human nature or the rules of man. You must accept the truth of Scriptures as the final authority in your decisions and as you relate with your wife and children and the world.
But what do I stand to benefit if I allow the word of God to rule my life as the head of my family? Firstly, God’s word provides you error-free guidance. That is, you will never get it wrong as the leader and shepherd of your wife and children by using the word of God. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Ps.119:105). Imagine the Spirit of God leading you in the discharge of your duty as the husbandman. Will you fail? No, you cannot. Secondly, the word of God illuminates your heart to see farther and better for your wife and children. The Bible says that the word shines in darkness and the darkness cannot comprehend it (Jn.1:5). As the husbandman and the seer in your family kingdom, vision is an important requirement for your office. You can only go as far as you can see, and you will treat your wife and children only to the extent of what you see and know. If you see your wife as a piece of furniture or your children as burden rather than gifts and assets from God, you will not be fully committed to their well-being. You must acknowledge that God created the office-husbandhood- that you occupy presently. Hence, if you must succeed, you must seek Him and His word. Remember that your greatest heritage as the shepherd and spiritual leader in your sheepfold is not measured by your age, colour or education or even position in your church but by how well you perform your function as the godly man, husband and father to your wife and children.
