The story of Jabez is very similar to the experiences of so many husbandmen. They work like elephants but eat like ants. That was my experience several years ago until I read a book titled “The Jabez Prayer”. But what is the experiences of Jabez and what lessons can you and I, whom God has committed His sheep into our care, learn from him?
This was a man who had an unfavourable circumstances around his life and that of his family. His name and that of his family was an embodiment of sorrow and struggle. He desired to move his family forward the same you have been longing to make the needed positive changes in your life and the lives of your wife and children. Considering the enormous responsibilities of the husbandman, he needed the help of God to overcome satan, sin and the world-freedom from spell and enchantment, freedom from barrenness, stagnation and struggle, addictions, sickness and diseases. But what did he do? And JABEZ CALLED ON THE GOD OF ISRAEL, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. AND GOD GRANTED HIM THAT WHICH HE REQUESTED. From this Scripture, Jabez deployed the weapon of prayer to change his story and that of his sheep and sheepfold. This husband prayed a short but precise prayer that terminated every form of stagnation in his life and by extension his family. That is the lesson for you and I as good shepherds.
As the head of the family, you must recognize that the will of God is for you to see your wife and children make progress in every area of their lives. However, if you don’t see that happen in their lives, then know that the enemy is at work and you must steadfastly resist it by the weapon of prayer. Yours may be financial dryness. It may even be stagnation in your marriage life or addiction to drugs or unhealthy habits. With prayer it can be broken.
But what kind of prayer can move your life and your sheep forward? It is effectual fervent prayer. You are in a spiritual warfare that requires you to be fervent in prayers. Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husband says, men ought to always pray and not faint (Lk.18:1). Your fervent prayer as the spiritual leader of the home can enforce the needed positive changes you crave for in the lives of your wife and children. You can move your wife and children forward, just as Jabez did by the instrument of faith-filled prayer.
