One of the greatest challenges the husbandman is confronted with in his quest to become and function as the good and godly man, husband and father is tradition and the philosophies of men. So, you hear some shepherds, when they want to take some decision concerning their leadership role to their wife and children would say things like this, “let us keep bible aside and face reality”. Others will say, “that is what the bible say, but I will do what my tradition and culture say”. As the godly husbandman, you must understand that the office you occupy, and the way God wants you to relate with your wife and children have its root in the word of God and not in your culture or tradition. The reality of your success as the good and godly husbandman is obeying all that God commands. You may not like it, but it is the right thing to do.
This is why the Scripture warns you and I to be very careful of the philosophies and tradition of the world because it influences us to act contrary to what God commands. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ (Col.2:8). As the head of your family, your life and conversation and conduct must be guided by the eternal principles of the word of God. Yes, the instructions from the Bible for you may not make any sense, but it contains life everlasting. Infact, when you do what the word of God says that you should do, it makes you wise. For instance, the Bible tells you to follow peace with all men…. yet you are not on speaking terms with your wife and children. You hold bitterness, revenge and grudges against them because it seems right from the perspective of man. This is not the way of God. It is the tradition of man. Whatever you do that defeats the will of God for your life as the good and godly husbandman must be rejected.
But how do I overcome the tradition and philosophies of man that influences unrighteous conduct? Firstly, you must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman. Secondly, you must invest your time in studying and meditating on the word of God. Thirdly, you must believe that the Bible which contains God’s words is true and it is written for your good. Fourthly, you must deliberately ask the Holy Spirit to anoint you with the Spirit of boldness, courage and faith. The Scripture says, be strong and of a good courage (Jos.1:6). The Bible also says, be strong and of a good courage (Jos.1:9). You must have the strength to draw the lines between what is acceptable and what is not, based on the word of God. That is what makes you a profitable and productive husbandman to God, your wife, children and the world.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for living my life and leading my wife and children in the ways of the world.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the power and deceitfulness of the tradition and philosophies of man.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill me with the Spirit of faith, boldness and courage so that I will do Your perfect in all mt decision.
FAITH CONFESSION
I refuse the philosophies and tradition of man but stick to the principles and dictates of the commandments and instructions of God in His word because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman to God, my wife and children in Jesus name. Amen.
