MAINTAIN A CONTINUAL WATCHFULNESS

“Maintain a continual watchfulness so that nothing of which you would be ashamed arises in your life” Oswald Chambers.

Today’s topic is derived from the quote of one of the greatest apostles in Christendom, Oswald Chambers. And it is so apt for you and I in the times we are living, when the husbandman seems to be careless. Oswald says, if you maintain a continuous watchfulness over your life and conduct, you will not be afraid of what men will say or accuse you of.

Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh at even or at midnight or at the cockcrowing or in the morning. Lest coming suddenly he find sleeping. And what I say unto you I say to unto all, watch (Mk.13:35-37)

I have come to discover that it is very easy for the shepherd to fall into error. I also observe that the call into the husbandman demands consistent watchfulness, otherwise he will fall. As the head of the family, you cannot afford to be careless with the way you conduct your life and the words that come from your mouth to your wife and children. In all things that you do, you must exercise watchfulness.

But how do I maintain watchfulness? The first step is to watch the information that you receive into your life. This includes the books you read, the films you watch and the messages you listen to. It is this information that you receive into your inner man that influences the quality of your thoughts and how you respond to issues that affect your relationship with your wife and children. The second step is for you to constantly engage the ministry and help of the Holy Ghost so that He can help to discern right from wrong. You and I are limited. A lot of the times, what appears right may be wrong from God’s word, but the Person of the Holy Spirit can help us out. There is a way that seem right but the end thereof are ways of death.

However, if you must enjoy the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit to keep a continuous watch over your life, wife, children and sheepfold, you must have and maintain a quality relationship with the Person of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. You must be born again and accept Him into your life. The Spirit of Christ, which is the power of God that empowers any husbandman to live a life of victory dwells in a regenerated life. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things have passed away and behold all things are become new (2Cor.5:17) It is the power that empowers you to overcome the lies and deceit of satan, sin and the world. It is the power that helps you see through the offers of life.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

• Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be watchful over my life, wife, children and sheepfold.
• Father, in the Name of Jesus, lead me away from ungodly influences and associations.
• Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me a profitable watchman over my life and that of my wife and children.

FAITH CONFESSION   

I maintain continued watchfulness over what I read, hear and listen to so that my life can reflect the nature of Jesus Christ to my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus. Amen.
