Bible Texts: Gen.2:15-18, Is.40:11, Jn.10:14, Heb.13:20, Eph.5:25, 1Tim.3:1-4, 1Tim.5:8, Eph.6:4, Ps.23:1, Gal.4:19, Rom.12:21
Being the husbandman is a privilege and comes with enormous responsibilities. You are two sides of a coin and that is what I want us to consider today few days after Father’s Day celebration. When you become the husbandman, that is the head of your sheepfold-wife and children, you enjoy certain privileges and you must deliver on responsibilities to God, your wife and children. But what is privilege and responsibility?
A privilege is special rights or advantages available only to a particular person. So, when you become the shepherd of your wife and children, you enjoy the privilege of leading the most important unit of the society-the family. When you are married to your wife, you enjoy honour from her. When you become the father, you enjoy honour and respect your children. Being the good and godly husbandman is a great privilege for you to demonstrate the love and character Jesus Christ towards your wife and children. You must appreciate that the office that you occupy is a position of trust, which you must not abuse. Your wife and children are looking up to you for guidance and direction. They are also looking to you for inspiration and protection. You are the head to support your wife and children to achieve their God given potentials. You must use your godly leadership as the man, husband and father for the good of your wife and children.
The second side of the coin is responsibility. Just the same way you enjoy certain privileges as the good and godly husbandman, you also have certain responsibilities that you must dispense to your wife and children. As the godly husbandman, you must understand that there are so many things that God has ordained that you must do to your wife and children. God wants you to love your wife as Jesus Christ has loved the Church (Eph.5:25). God wants you to train, nurture and motivate your children in the way and counsel of godliness and righteousness (Eph.6:4). God wants you to protect your wife and children from the assault of satan, sin and the world (Jn.10:10). God wants you to provide for the spiritual, material, emotional and financial need of your wife and children (1Tim.5:8, Ps.23:1). God wants you to teach your wife and children His word (2Tim.2:24). God wants you to build godly inheritance for your wife and children (Pro.13:22). But why must I take up all these responsibilities as the good and godly husbandman?
Firstly, responsibilities help you develop and become a matured shepherd. Secondly, it fast-tracks your spiritual growth. What this means is that you give more time to studying the Bible to know what God demands of you as the man, husband and father. You also maintain a praying life for strength and wisdom so that you can discharge your responsibilities faithfully, timely and joyfully.
There is so much that God has empowered you to do as the godly man, husband and father. You must embrace these tasks and give yourself to doing all God commands you to do because that is the evidence that you are indeed the good and godly husbandman.
Are you glad that you are the husbandman?

FAITH CONFESSION
I enjoy the benefits of the good shepherd and I fulfill all the responsibilities of the godly man, husband and father because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman to my wife and children in Jesus name. Amen.
