Bible Texts: Gen.2:15-25, Gen.4:1, Eph.5:25, Col.3:19, Gal.4:19, Eph.6:4, 1Cor.13:4-8, 1Tim.3:1-5, Lk.18:1, Gen.3:16, Ps.23:1, 1Tim.5:8, 2Tim.2:6, 1Tim.5:18, Is.37:35

Over the years and in my interaction with husbandmen, I have discovered that many do not have a good understanding of marriage, what it demands and the blessings that come with it. And because of this lack of understanding, many husbandmen have failed and many more are struggling to fulfill their assignments. That is why before you start reading today’s devotional, it is very important for you to understand what marriage is from the perspective of the word of God. If you understand it, it will save you from the rudiments of the world and destroy every false teaching and traditions that before now has held you captive.

What is marriage? The first is that marriage is not a contract that once the job has been executed, the parties go their separate ways. The second is that marriage is not the idea of man, denomination or culture. So, man does not have the master plan in his hand. God has the plan because He made marriage. It was His idea.

So, what is marriage from God’s perspective? Marriage is a spiritual, covenant relationship between God, man and woman (Gen.2:15-18, Mal.2:14, Matt.19:5). Note these three important words: spiritual, covenant, relationship. In Genesis chapter 2 and verses 15 to 18, the Scripture says, it is not good for man to be alone, let us make for him a helpmeet (Gen.2:15-18). There is a covenant relationship between you and your wife and God (Mal.2:14).

Secondly, in Genesis chapter 2 and verse 24 to 25, the word of God says, for this reason shall a man leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh (Gen.2:24-25). There is also a covenant relationship between the husbandman and his wife. Marriage presents you the greatest platform to practice the covenant.

Now, what role do you play as the good and godly husbandman in this spiritual covenant relationship? The first is that you have a covenant relationship with God and your wife and children. And because of this, you have the responsibility to provide direction and godly influence for your wife and children. Secondly, you provide protection for your wife and children, both spiritually and physically. As long as Jesus Christ was with His disciples, nobody could hurt them, not even the Pharisees. In Acts chapter 27 and verses 22-24, the Scripture tells us of how Apostle Paul assured everyone with him in the boat of their safety notwithstanding the storm that came threatening to destroy both the passengers and the boat. Thirdly, you are a recovery agent. This means that you are in the marriage covenant to recover and restore everything that your wife and children may have lost to satan, sin and the world.

But for you to function in these glorious responsibilities, there are three important weapons you will require. The first is that you must contend in prayers and fasting (Mk.9:29, Lk.18:1). The forces of hell are bent on seeing that you do not function in the way God wants you to. So, you must not sit back and watch. The second is that you must contend in faith (Heb.11:33). You must fight the good fight of faith. The third is that you must keep declaring the will of God over your life (Rom.10:10). You must not keep quiet. You must continue to say what God says you are as the good and godly husbandman.

God has made marriage for your glory. Make the most of it.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, open my eyes to see the glorious heritage of being the godly husbandman in marriage.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to contend for my position as the good and godly man, husband and father.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, guide me through Your word and let it gain root in my heart and bear fruits in my life.

FAITH CONFESSION

I receive the help of God to function triumphantly as the good and godly husbandman to my wife and children in the marriage covenant Jesus name. Amen.
