Bible Texts: Gen.2:14-25, Matt.22:37, Col.3:19, 1Pet.3:7, Eph.6:4, Col.4:6, Matt.5:14-16, Eph.5:25-29, Gal.4:19, Rom.12:15, 2Cor.5:17, Rom.6:14
Before you start reading today’s devotional, I want you to take a few minutes to study the Bible texts given above and note what the word of God commands you to do. When you are done, ask yourself this simple question. Where am I in this journey to becoming the good and godly husbandman?
Now back to devotion for today.
If you are asked to measure yourself as the husbandman, what measuring standards would you employ? Do you measure up to the Biblical standards of who the husbandman is? If you stand before the judgment throne of God at the end of your journey on earth, can Jesus say to you “well done, thou good and faithful servant”?
Let us examine the following Bible passages and use them to measure the true value of the husbandman.
And the Lord took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it (Gen.2:14).
The will of God for the husbandman is to work with his hands and minds. God is a worker. Jesus Christ is also a worker. So, you have no excuse not to work. It is an abuse of privilege and a demotion to the value of the husbandman if you are lazy. You must understand that you are the provider in your sheepfold. And as the husbandman, it is ungodly for you to ask the parents of your wife to hand over their daughter to you and you end up depending on her for your upkeep as well as the family’s.
This is God’s warning to every lazy husbandman.
He that does not work must not eat (2Thess.3:10).
So, are you working and earning a living, providing shelter, education, food and clothing to your wife and children? Or it is your wife that has taken your God-ordained responsibilities?
Husbands love your wife and be not bitter against her (Col.3:19).
Do you love your wife? Have you demonstrated the character of the love of Jesus Christ as provided for in Scriptures (Eph.5:25, 1Cor.13:4-8, 1Pet.3:7). Do you still harbour bitterness and unforgiveness against your wife in your heart? Do you still wish you never married your wife? Are you ruler or a master-servant to your wife? You must understand that God expects you to love your wife the same way Jesus Christ loves the church (Eph.5:25). Jesus Christ is loyal to the church and He protects the bride (church) against abuse, hurt and attacks. That is service and it is the hallmark of the good and godly husbandman. And because you have the mind of Christ, you can truly love your wife as Christ has loved the church.
And ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph.6:4).
Have you relinquished your responsibilities as a father of your children to your wife? How much godly influence and character do you exert on your children? Are you the kind of father you would want your children to model their lives after? You must understand that your children are your seeds. They come from your loins. It is your job to take care of them. It is your covenant responsibilities to nurture, train and guide them in the way and admonition of the Lord, helping them to walk in the fear of God.
Examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith; test yourself. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you-unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust you will discover that we have not failed the test (2Cor.13:5-10)
