The times we live in are interesting times for the husbandman. Knowledge is on the increase, and more people are becoming independent and gradually losing the essence of who they are in Christ (Eph.5:16). And this morning when I woke up to write this devotional, the Person of the Holy Spirit led me to Mark Gospel chapter 13 and verse 37.
Lest coming suddenly he finds you sleeping. AND WHAT I SAY UNTO YOU I SAY TO ALL, WATCH (Mk.13:36-37).
As the husbandman, why must I watch?
Woe unto them that are ease in zion (Am.6:1)
You must watch so that you do not go away from the values and principles of God that builds the good and godly husbandman. Many atimes, it is easy to start doing things that are contrary to the instructions and commandments of God for you as the man, husband and father. And satan, sin and the world will give you reasons for disobeying God and His words. You must watch what you think, what you say, what you do, how you respond and react and how you lead yourself, wife and children to be sure that you conform to the perfect will of God for you (Philp.4:8).
You must watch so that you can continue to be the gatekeeper of the sheepfold of God in your custody. Remember that you are the shepherd and your wife and children are your sheep and all of you are in the sheepfold. And as the shepherd, you are the gatekeeper. No one person or influence can come into the sheepfold unless you permit it.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him, the porter openeth and the sheep hear his voice and he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out (Jn.10:1-3)
Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman says, watch. So, how do I watch?
You watch by continuous study of the Bible by the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit (Jn.14:26). Each time you read and meditate on the word, with the Person of the Holy Spirit guiding you, you learn new things and gain fresh revelation. And it is this revealed word that builds your faith to do the perfect will of God as the husbandman.
You also watch by praying for yourself and praying for your sheep-wife and children with the word of God (Gal.4:19). Jesus speaking said, watch and pray that ye fall not into temptation (Matt.26:41). Prayer empowers you to hear when God is speaking and to see when God is showing you things. One of the important prayers you must pray is for God to give you hearing ears and seeing eyes (Matt.13:16). When you pray, you become empowered to stop ungodly influences in and around your life, sheep and sheepfold.
Watch! Again, watch!
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for being careless in my leadership role as the man, husband and father.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me hearing ears and seeing eyes.
- Father, in the name of Jesus, empower me to exercise power and authority as I watch over my life, wife, children and sheepfold.
FAITH CONFESSION
I stand upon my watch and set myself upon the tower of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to exercise watchfulness over my life, wife, children and sheepfold because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
