CHARIOTS AND CHARIOTEERS

Spread the love

Bible Texts: 1Kgs.1:5-6, Eph.6:4, Pro.29:15, Pro.13:24, Deut.6:7-10, 1Sam.8:1-7, 1Sam.3:12-13, Pro.19:18, Pro.23:13-14

Today’s topic is from 1st Kings Chapter 1 and it is a message for the father. I encourage you to invest your time to study, meditate and act on it as the Person of the Holy Spirit reveals to you areas where you need to act as the husbandman.

About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, I will make myself king. So, he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him. Now his father, king David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking…(1Kg.1:5-6) NLT

Recall that the husbandman is a three-in-one personality. He is the man (Gen.1:26-28), the husband (Gen.2:14-18) and the father (Gen.4:1). And so the Bible passage in 1st Kings Chapter 1 verses 5 through 6 teaches us about the failure of the husbandman in fulfilling his role as a teacher and the consequences of such irresponsibility.

Adonijah, the son of David was a child left to himself. He had no boundaries and was not disciplined when he did what was wrong. His father, David, overindulged him because amongst other things he was from a very wealthy home. The Scripture says, “his father, king David HAD NEVER disciplined him at any time (1Kgs.1:6). And because he was not disciplined, he grew to become a rebellious child who organized chariots and charioteers to forcefully take over the throne of his father. However, he did not succeed and he died ingloriously and shamefully.

As the good and godly husbandman, you must be very careful not to be carried away by this modern style of fatherhood, where the child cannot be disciplined or corrected. It has become so sad that fathers are afraid to confront their children when they become unruly and cross the line. And sadly many have ended up in shame and embarrassment. It is important for you to understand that the word of God, though old, is valid for today’s needs.

A child that is left to himself shall bring shame (Pro.29:15)

You do not love your child when you indulge him or her. You are destroying his or her destinies. And the ultimate victim is you. You may not be hard physically on your children, but you must be firm. You must draw the lines that they must never cross. And when they do cross the line, you must confront them in love, not minding the look on their faces (Pro.23:13-14).

God has given you children as gifts. You must nurture them in the way and admonition of the Lord (Eph.6:4). When you discipline your children, they will not die but will become better people and useful to God, to you and to humanity.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be bold to confront my children when they are wrong.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, grant me wisdom and help me to nurture my children in Your ways.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, put the spirit of the fear of God into the hearts of my children and help them to walk in Your ways.

FAITH CONFESSION

I receive power and wisdom to train my children in the way of the Lord Jesus because that is the responsibility I have towards them as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus Name. Amen.
