Jesus speaking said to His disciples that if anyone wants to be the greatest in this kingdom must of necessity be a servant. As the head of the family, that is the attitude you must have in your relationship with your wife and children. Yes, it is true that you are the head. It is also true that you are the leader in your family fold. So, the issue of your authority cannot be contested by anyone. But, you must understand that serving your flock is the gateway to reigning as a king and a priest in their lives (Rev.5:10-12). You are not a nonentity when you serve your flock. It doesn’t demean your position nor make you appear unfit. Jesus Christ, the perfect example of a good and godly husband gave every husband a pattern. As the Head of the disciples, He stooped low and washed their feet, even when Peter tried to resist it. At every point in His leadership, He served His way into the hearts of the disciples and the world today. The call to the husbandman is not a call to entitlement but to service. And you cannot exact positive influence in the lives of your flock if you are not a servant.
So, how do I serve my wife and children? The first way you serve your flock is to pray for them until Christ is formed in them. You also intercede for them until they attain the fullness of God’s plan and purpose for their lives. If you study Jn.17, you will observe that Jesus prayed for the church. He tarried on behalf of His sheep so that they could be strong in the assignment ahead and succeed. Don’t claim you are too busy to pray for your flock. Don’t get lost in the rat race of life and abandon your primary responsibility of intercession. The second way you serve them is through your time investment. The greatest need of your flock in the times we are in today is not your money. It is not the vacation. It is not the clothes. It is not the rich lifestyles. It is in the quality of time you have for them. Your flock wants to express their hopes, fears and expectations. And if you are not available for them, someone else would. The third way you can serve them is with your financial and material resources. The Scripture in 1Timothy chapter 5, challenges husbands to take responsibility to provide spiritual, financial and material needs of his family. The Bible did not assign this task to your wife nor your relations or even parents. As the head of your family, it is a great disservice to the office of the husbandman and the kingdom of God if it is your wife or parents that provide the finances that run your family fold. If Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of a godly husband, did not depend on His disciples to feed the team, then you have no reason to do otherwise. Therefore, serve your way up because it is the hallmark of a good and godly husband.
