And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also. For therefore am I sent, and he preached in the synagogues of Galilee (Lk.4:43-44).
You must remember that you are called by God to be a good teacher and example to your wife and children and the world around. You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Today’ devotional is directed to every husband, who holds a leadership position in the church. As the head of your family, your first place of assignment where you are to demonstrate the love of God is in your home. Your first parish is not your church but your home, and your first congregation is your wife and children. It is hypocrisy for you to be seen as a loving, caring, faithful and compassionate husband by outsiders and yet you are a terror to your wife and children at home. Nothing is worse than being a pretentious husband. Jesus Christ, the Perfect example of how husbands are ordained to behave was first an example to His disciples, before extending His gestures to outsiders. He interacted more with His disciples. He taught them and helped them to make wise decisions. For instance, Jesus asked His disciples who did people think He was. Some said that He was Elijah while others said He was the prophet. But He specifically wanted to find out from his immediate family, His 12 disciples their assessment of His personality.
As the head of your family, it is not what outsiders think of you that is as important as what your wife and children think of you. No one should know you better than your wife and children. Your flocks should be able to vouch for your character without fear or favour. If your goodness does not start from your home and with your relationship with your wife and children, you are of all men miserable. But how do I preach first at home? Firstly, rework your focus. What this means is that your focus should be to walk in and work out God’s will for your flocks. Secondly, you must consciously seek the help of the ministry of the Holy Spirit to help you live a life of truthfulness and holiness. Thirdly, keep looking unto Jesus Christ (Heb.12:1-3), because He is the Author and finisher of your faith. He is your perfect example. And as you work to be a good and godly husband at home, your life becomes an example for your wife and children to emulate.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me a living example to my wife and children.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to become a positive influence to my wife and children.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from every root of deceitfulness, unhealthy habits and pretenses.
FAITH CONFESSION
I give my life as a seed unto God that I may live a life well pleasing to Him, my wife and children as a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
