If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God (Col.3:1-3)
As the head of your family and the spiritual authority that God has placed over your wife and children, what occupies your mind? What have you chosen to believe and who do you believe? These questions are very critical when we consider the challenges that come with leading the sheep. Your wife could disrespect you. She may distrust you. She could even deny you your rights as a man, husband and father. And rightly so, you could be very unhappy with her. It is at this point of your leadership that satan throws at you ungodly offers. He advises you to take revenge or seek comfort and solace in alcohol or with another woman. But that is not the way to go for you. This is why the Word of God admonishes you and I to always seek the things which are above.
So, the question is, what is above and how would it help me to become a good and godly husband? God is above and the Wisdom of God also sits there. In Ps.121, the Scripture has this to say. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth (Ps.121:1-2). When you seek those things that are above, you are actually seeking the fullness and nature of God. You are also seeking the fullness of the personality of Jesus Christ, the perfect example of a good and godly husband. What flows in your direction from God is His wisdom. You must understand that in leading your sheep, you need the excellency of the wisdom of God because it is the principal thing. The wisdom of God empowers you to speak the right words to your flock and at the right time. The wisdom of God also provides you with direction on the steps to take to reassure your wife that you are now a changed and transformed husband. It also empowers you to discern what is profitable and good from what is destructive and hurting.
However, there are two major ways you seek what is above. The first is by giving attention to the study, meditation and practice of the Word of God; secondly, by praying the Word of God in faith. Every time you study your Bible, you engage the personalities of God, His Son, and the Spirit (Jn.1:1-3); and when you pray you invite the power of God into your life thereby making you to function as a godly shepherd.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from every form of distraction and keep my eyes to be focused on You.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me a heart to trust Your Word for my life and flock.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to function as a good and godly husband to my wife and children.
