Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, why do thy disciples transgress the traditions of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition (Matt.15:1-4)
From our study today, there was an important issue that came to fore. And it is the supremacy of the commandments of God over the traditions and rules of man. The scribes wanted to know why the disciples of Jesus obeyed the commandments of God rather than follow the traditions and culture of the Jews. God had to clarify which is more superior and gave the reason why. The Scripture said that Jesus could not do much because of the tradition…. (Matt.15:6). So, as the head of your family, you must understand that the commandment of God is more important and takes precedence over your culture, tradition and belief systems of your village.
Many husbands have struggled to please God in their function as the man, husband and father because of tradition. Most husbands grow up to believe certain traditions and they carry this tradition into their family life. Unfortunately, these traditions cause strain in their relationship between them and their sheep leading to the destruction of the sheepfold. As powerful as Jesus Christ’s message was in His days on earth, it did not profit some people. Not because God’s Word is powerless but due to the tradition of the people. Most husbands cannot help their wives at home. They believe that it is a taboo according to their tradition. So, the wife is left to do all the work while the husband sits on the sofa reading newspaper. And when the wife is under pressure from taking care of her husband, her children and all other obligations, she may just explode at the slightest demand her husband.
As the head of your family, you must understand that God has provided you with the Bible which contains His instructions, precepts and counsels that will help you to function gloriously as the good and godly husband. You must subscribe to the demands of Scripture if you want to be commended by God for being a good steward. (Gen.18:19). But you must be willing to accept the word of God as your final authority over and above your village or tribal culture and tradition. In Is.1:19, it says, if you will be willing and obedient, you will eat the good of the land. Do you want to see the fighting with your wife stopped? Obey God’s commandment concerning your relationship with your wife. Do you want to see your children respect and trust you? Then, be their coach, trainer and mentor. Would you rather obey God or your tradition? The choice is yours. But you can choose to obey God.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, renew my mind to accept Your commandments totally.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, break the power of tradition at work in my life.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with the spirit of obedience to obey all Your commandments.
FAITH CONFESSION
I accept and comply with all the commandments of God over and above the traditions of my village because that is what strengthens my headship as the good and godly husband to my wife and children in Jesus name. Amen.
