A leader must be not thin-skinned………(1Tim.3:4-6) MSG

Another quality that God expects you to have as the good and godly man, husband and father is your ability to be flexible and open to correction, counsel and advice, even if it hurts your ego. As the godly shepherd, you cannot claim to know everything. It is true that you are the head of the family. It is also true that you are the leader in the sheepfold. However, it is also true that you need the support of your sheep by way of advice and correction. This means that you must learn to take corrections and counsel from your wife even if she is the least educated woman in the world. If she tells you that she was not happy the way you treated her or spoke to her. And you know that you actually treated her disrespectfully, don’t argue with her. Simply, apologize. Perhaps, she is aware of some business, career or family decisions that you want to take and she offers to suggest a few things you could do, you don’t have to shut her down. When your children say something about your personality and suggest some ways of improving yourself, don’t ignore them or think that they are children. It may be your anger towards them, your abusive words to them or the way you maltreat their mother or outsiders. Your refusal to be flexible to be corrected or advised is pride and God hates it.

But why is it important for the godly husbandman to be flexible? The Bible has this to say. In the multitude of counsel there is safety (Pro.11:14). You are saved from losses, shame, regrets and even death when you are open to the counsel your sheep gives you. If your wife counsels that you stop picking the calls of those ladies who send you sexual texts, it is for your own good. If she advices you to stop visiting that woman at odd time, it is because of your safety. Many husbandmen have ignored their wives counsel about some steps and actions that were about to take and ended up in shame. Some husbandmen have contracted incurable sexual diseases, others have lost their investments, brought shame to their sheepfold and many more have died. As the leader of your sheep, you must know that you are not perfect. You must also know that you are not all-knowing. You must also appreciate that your wife and children are in your life to help you. So, when they offer their counsel, don’t ignore them. Receive their counsel, pray about it and ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes of understanding to see what they are saying.

So, for you to be able to be open-minded, you must intentionally ask Jesus Christ to break the power of pride in your life and input in you the spirit of humility. And this is why you must ask, seek, and knock at the door of Jesus (Matt.7:7). God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, I ask You to forgive me for not taking counsel from my sheep.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, I ask for Your mercy to prevail in my life for being proud and unyielding to You and my sheep.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be humble in heart and open to corrections and counsel.

FAITH CONFESSION

I receive the Spirit of humility and by the Spirit of God, I open myself to be corrected, counseled and advised by my wife and children because that is what guarantees my heritage as the good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
