Main Scriptures: Job.2:9-10
More Scriptures: Ps.51:10, Gen.3:6, Job.1:12
Today, by the help of the Holy Spirit, we would be looking at the lives of two husbands who were confronted by the same challenge and how they responded. This is so important when we consider our position as the leader of our sheepfold and head of our sheep. It is my hope and prayer that at the end of this teaching, you will be empowered to take your rightful position in Jesus Christ.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it (1Cor.10:13) ESV
Let us look at the lives of these two husbands-Adam and Job. In Genesis chapter three (3), the deceiver, satan showed up in the Garden. Satan engaged Adam’s wife and deceived her to eat the forbidden fruit in the presence of her husbands. Adam watched while the conversation was going on between his wife and the deceiver. Adam knew what God had commanded them to eat and what not to eat. The instruction not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was with him. But in Gen.3:6, his wife offered him the forbidden fruit to eat and he did eat. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof and did eat and GAVE ALSO UNTO HER HUSBAND WITH HER AND HE DID EAT (Gen.3:6). And the consequence was that they both fell, and the husband got more of the punishment than the wife.
Job on the hand was also offered the forbidden fruit by his wife after he had suffered so many calamities in his family-death of all his children and loss of all his possessions (Job 1:14-20). Satan had had a conversation with God about Job (Job.1:9-12). He also came through his wife. Then said his wife unto him, dost thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God and die. BUT HE SAID UNTO HER, THOU SPEAKEST AS ONE OF THE FOOLISH WOMEN SPEAKETH. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? IN ALL THIS DID NOT JOB SIN WITH HIS LIPS (Job 2:9-10). Job’s wife asked Job to curse God and die, afterall, God was no longer a critical factor in his life. But Job did not concede to his wife. He refused the offer from her.
As a husband, you must draw the line between what is acceptable and what is not, on the basis of the word of God, with your wife. Much as you must honour her as Christ honours the Church, you must let her know that you are accountable first to God. You must not allow your wife to influence you to disobey the commandments of Scriptures. If God’s word has said it, you must lead her to obey it willingly and delightsomely.
