As we come close to the end of May 2023, I want us to take time out to reflect on how we have conducted ourselves in our relationships with our wife, children and in the marketplace. I want to encourage you to examine yourself to see if you have developed the good and godly virtues after the Person of Jesus Christ that makes you the husbandman, indeed. The word of God admonishes you and I to look unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2). And that the path of the just is like a shining light that shines brighter and brighter unto a perfect day (Pro.4:18).
As a reminder, let us consider the word of God in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 8 as the test guide for every husbandman who wants to grow to become the good and godly man, husband and father.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are TRUE, whatever things are NOBLE, whatever things are JUST, whatever things are PURE, whatever things are LOVELY, whatever things are of GOOD REPORT, if there be anything of virtue and if there is anything PRAISEWORTHY, MEDITATE on these things (Philp.4:8)
Philippians chapter 4 and verse 8 is one of my favourite passages in the Bible. It is like a road map for every husbandman who wants to be like Jesus. It also serves as a check. As the husbandman, this passage of the Bible has the power to transform you and make you a better leader to your wife and children. The instructions help you to think deeply about what you want to do. And if you can allow this test to guide your decisions and action, you will just realize that your life will become a force to be reckoned with and your relationship with your wife and children will experience bliss on an increasing basis.
As the husbandman, you are faced with choices and decisions you have to make towards your wife and children, in your finances, on your journeys and even in your relationships. And these decisions may have either a positive or negative impact. God wants you to subject the action you want to take to the test in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 8. If it is good, lovely, pure, of good report and will bring praise to God and to your wife and children, go ahead and do it. But if it doesn’t agree with the word of God, don’t do it. Simply throw it away.
But how do I put what I want to do to test on the basis of God’s word?
By giving attention to studying the word of God (Jn.5:39, 2Tim.2:15). The more you study the word of God, the more you have the word stored in your heart so that when you want to make decisions, the Person of the Holy Spirit, reminds you (Ezk.2:2, Jn.14;26). Secondly, by praying for the outpouring of the Holy Ghost and the power of the Highest to overshadow you (Lk.1:35). When the presence of God overwhelms you, you will no longer be ruled by the dictates of your emotions or the rudiments and philosophies of men. Rather, you become empowered to only do those things that please God, your wife and children.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to meditate on things that will bring You praise.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the corruption of this world and the rudiments of men.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to bear good and lovely fruits as I lead my life, wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
I meditate on what is true, just, pure, lovely, noble and of good report because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus Name. Amen.
