THE POWER OF A FATHER

Spread the love

Bible Texts: Mk.10:13-16, Deut.6:7-10, Eph.6:4, Gen.1:26-28, 1Tim.3:2-5, Is.61:9, Ps.1:3, Ps.127:3, Gen.18:19, Pro.19:18

Yesterday, we discovered from Scripture that there is the law of the husband, and that law is built on the foundation of the husband having a genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We also learnt that relationship with Jesus is the foundation on which everything else is built.

Today, let us consider the authority and power of the good and godly father, in the times we are in when fathers are struggling to bring their children under the obedience, admonition and nurture of Christ.

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them, and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily, I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up to his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them (Mk.10:13-16)

In Mark Gospel chapter 10, Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman, demonstrated how the good and godly father can exercise his authority and power over the lives of his children. What did He teach it? Jesus did three things.

The first action is that Jesus Christ brought the children close to Himself.

And he took them up to his arms (Mk.10:16a)

Fathers, you are not only the provider to your child (ren), but you must also have a healthy relationship with them. You must be their best friend and cheerleader.

The second action is that Jesus Christ had a physical connection with the children.

…Put his hands upon them (Mk.10:16a)

As the good and godly father, God wants you to use your hands to connect to your children, spiritually, mentally and emotionally by giving them a handshake, a hug or even a tap on their back as a sign of positive affirmation either when they fail or succeed. Jesus Christ consistently touched the blind and they see, the lame and they walk and the deaf and they hear.

Thirdly, Jesus Christ blessed the children.

And blessed them (Mk.10:16b)

Jesus did not curse the children, but He blessed them. He empowered the children by the words of His mouth just like God did to man in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26-28. So, regardless of your children’s failures, weaknesses and shortcomings, don’t curse them. Just like Jesus Christ, bless them and prophesy good and godliness into their lives.

You are the prophet over your children. You have the first right over them. You have authority and power from God to make them a blessing to their world (Is.61:9). Therefore, take your rightful place of authority and power by the word of God and lead your children on to glory, honour and greatness (Eph.6:4, Gal.4:19, Deut.6:7-10, Num.6:20-22).

Hallelujah!
