Main Scriptures: Php.2:5-8
More Scriptures: Jn.1:1, Lk.12:43, Jer.10:21
The greatest mistake a lot of husbands make is to think entitlement in the discharge of their covenant responsibility as the man, husband and father. Many husbands think that they are entitled to so much without any corresponding responsibilities. They think their sheep owe them everything and they owe their sheep nothing. This wrong mind set is against the true value of the godly leadership and consequently creates a wide gap between the shepherd and the sheep. It has also made husbands to think they are masters while their sheep are slaves. This is not how God created you to function. Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husband, gives you and I a perfect model to emulate. The Scripture says that Jesus Christ, though He is God, made Himself of no reputation…(Php.2:7)….. In Jn.1:1-3, the Bible has this to say about Jesus Christ. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God……All things were made by Him and without Him nothing was made….. (Jn.1:1). Imagine for a moment the personality of the Groom, Jesus Christ. He is older than all creatures; He was part of the Trinity that created all things; He has the power of life and death in His hands. The natural expectation would have been an entitlement mentality. Rather, He came to serve the bride. He washed the disciple’s feet and always looked out for their best interests.
God wants you to reflect the model of Christ to your wife and children. God wants you to serve your sheep and not treat them as if they are slaves. He wants you to sacrifice your comfort and convenience for your sheep. God wants you to uphold your sheep because you are their foundation.
So how do I overcome the entitlement mentality? The first is to acknowledge that God sent you to lead your sheep and you are in their lives to serve them. Until you acknowledge that you are a true servant, you cannot function as one. And that acknowledgement starts in your mind. This is why the Bible says that……as a man thinks in his mind so is he (Pro.23:7) You must picture the model of Jesus Christ in your mind because He is your perfect example of the good and godly husband (Heb.12:2). The second step is for you to do exactly what the model you have created in your mind is showing you by taking practical action. This is because faith without works is false. If you believe that you are like Jesus Christ then you must act like Him. Lastly, you must ask the Lord for help in prayers. For it is the Lord who gives you the power to will and to do of His good pleasure (Philp.2:13).
Jesus Christ is your perfect example, be His model to your wife and children because that is what makes you the good and godly husband.
