The Spirit that instils knowledge and the fear of God…. (Is.11:2)
I have come to discover that any shepherd who walks in the fear of God will always desire and work to please God. And this attitude reflects in the way he treats his wife, children and the people around him. It is this Spirit that puts a caution and draws a boundary for the husbandman from engaging in theft, adulterous and sexual immorality, murder, uncontrolled anger, unforgiveness, bitterness, envy and evil thoughts. Also, very importantly as the head of your family, when you have the Spirit of the fear of God in you, you will love your sheep as Christ has loved the Church.
As the head of the family and the leader in your sheepfold, you must understand that the Spirit of the fear of God does not have anything to do with your position or status in church or in the society. If you don’t have this Spirit, you will never know when you have missed it. You will think that you are right or justified. Consider this for a moment. The Spirit of the fear of God helps you to know that having an extra-marital affair outside your wife is a sin and that God hates it. It is also the Spirit of the fear of God that makes me you to choose good over evil and forgiveness over hatred. It is true that your wife and children would offend you. They will do things that would hurt you. And when these things happen, satan will suggest to you to act as the world would. Satan will suggest to you to run to the beer parlour, run to brothel to cool off with a prostitute. He will even suggest to you to physically abuse her or even kill her. But if you have the Spirit of the fear of God working in you, you will refuse to do the bidding of satan, sin and the world.
But what is the fear of God? Ps.24:1-2 provides the answer. He that hath clean hands and a pure heart, who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity nor sworn deceitfully (Ps.24:4). Simply put, the fear of God is doing the things that please Him. And this involves your spirit, soul and body. However, the Spirit of the fear of God will not jump on you. You have to ask for it in prayers. It is God’s way. Ask and it shall be given, seek and you shall find and knock and the door shall be opened to you (Matt.7:7). You must also ask the Lord to awaken your consciousness so that when you do what is wrong and against the will of God to your sheep, your inner man prompts you immediately. You cannot become the good and godly husband if you don’t have the Spirit of the fear of God working in greater measure in you. You must crave for it and let the Spirit live through you.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the spirit of carnality.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, awaken my consciousness to know when I am wrong and right.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to give attention to Your instructions, corrections and admonitions and make me useful to my wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
I have the Spirit of the fear of God working in me and it shows in my thoughts, conduct, actions, understanding and decisions I take towards my wife and children and the challenges of life because that is what makes me the good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
