Main Scriptures: John 1:6-9
More Scriptures: Rom.12:1-3, Job.32:8, Matt.5:16
The first responsibility that you have to your sheep is to be a witness of godliness to them. This is so important because you are their leader. As the head of the family, you are sent to your wife and children to bear the light of Jesus, in the same manner John the Baptist was sent from God to bear witness of the Light, Jesus. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light (Jesus) that all men through him might believe. Jn.1:6-7. Your headship is principally to be a channel through which Jesus can manifest Himself in the lives of your wife and children. John the Baptist came to prepare the way for Jesus. And today, he is described as the greatest in the kingdom. As the spiritual head and authority of your family kingdom, showing your wife and children the ways of Jesus Christ remain the best way they will remember you. You are the light in your home. Your wife and children are looking up to you for inspiration and mentorship. So, you have so much to give to your wife and children.
But how do you bear witness of the Light to your wife and children? First, by the way and manner you conduct yourself before them and to outsiders. In Matthew chapter 5 and verse 16, the Scriptures say “let your light so shine before men (Matt.5:16)”. So, the question you must daily ask yourself as a leader is this. Am I an example of how Jesus would have lived His life to His sheep? Can my actions and conduct be said to in tune with Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husband? These are questions that help to keep you in check so that you don’t fall into error. The second way is to mind the words that you speak to your wife and children. You may be generous with your money to your sheep but how gracious are your words to them. Your words convey your spirit and that is what frames the lives and destinies of your wife and children (Gen.1:1-3). You cannot continue to use abusive words on your wife and children and expect them to act differently. You cannot also continue to use words that hurt their emotions and think they will be emotionally stable.
So, for you to bear the LIGHT to your sheep, you must act on these three things. Embrace the word of God as your final authority. And you do this by giving attention to studying the Bible, meditating on it and praying it into manifestation. Secondly, you must ask for empowerment of the Holy Ghost to act on what you know from the word of God (Acts 1:1). Therefore, as you lead your sheep, be conscious that you are a witness of the life of Jesus Christ to your wife and children.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE:
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, sanctify me by the truth of Your word.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me both a hearer and doer of Your word.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me a living and holy sacrifice to my wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION:
I bear the LIGHT of Christ and I shine the LIGHT to my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
