Main Scriptures: Philippians 2:25-30

More Scriptures: Matt.6:22, Mk.9:29, Rev.2:2-3

Meanwhile, I thought I ought to send Epaphroditus back to you. You sent him to help me in my need; well, he and I have been real brothers, working and battling side by side. ………For he risked his life for the work of Christ and was at the point of death while trying to do for me the things you couldn’t do because you were far away. (Philippians 2:25-30) TLB

Today’s devotional is to encourage you, who have sacrificed so much for your sheep and to assure you that God recognizes all your good deeds toward your wife and children. I want you to know that you have not labored in vain for your sheep. People out there may consider you as a “nobody”, but God has not and will always honour you because you obey all His commandments. This is why the example in our main study today is very relevant to you. The main character in these verses of Scripture is Epaphroditus. He demonstrated brotherliness and friendliness to the brethren. He tirelessly pursued the well-being of his followers. And in due course, he was recognized and honoured. God, by His Spirit, wants you to follow the footstep of this minister. So, continue to serve your wife and children with all that you have got, even when it seems distressing. Secondly, act like a soldier for your wife and children by defending them through and through. Thirdly, be a tireless hard worker. Work on yourself and work to develop your wife and children. Fourthly, continue to minister life to your sheep instead of destruction.

However, for you to be like Epaphroditus to your sheep, you must be humble in your spirit. Humility is the platform on which the grace of God is released to you. In Jas. 1:9, the Scripture says, let the brother of low degree, rejoice in that he is exalted. And you can attain this lifestyle of humility through the weapon of prayers and fasting. You must understand that humility is the nature of Christ and He desires you to have it also. And prayer is one platform to enforce this nature. Another thing you must do if you must continue to give your best to your wife and children is to see your service to them as doing it unto God. The Word of God says very clearly that whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord (Col.3:23). God is the reason you are the man, husband and father. He is the reason why you are the head of your family. Therefore, He is the Person you will give account of your stewardship to. When you see God as the One who has sent you, your zeal to give your best to your wife and children will not diminish. As the spiritual leader and pastor over your flock, you must see your wife and children from the eyes of God-compassion, merciful, kind and blessed seed. And as you give your best to your flock, you will become their hero forever and a man after God’s heart (Gen.18:19).

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill me with the joy of the Holy Ghost.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to be a faithful servant to my sheep.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, let the zeal to serve my sheep consume me.

 FAITH CONFESSION

I am consumed by the zeal to serve my wife and children in the fear of the Lord because that is what makes me the godly man, husband and father in Jesus Name. Amen.
