Praise God in the highest! God has brought us all to the last day in the month of June 2022, signaling the end of the first half of the year. To God alone we give all the glory. As we trust Jesus Christ for a glorious end and on this last day, I want to focus on the third person of the husbandman-the father. My prayer is that you will make fresh commitments to become the good and godly father to your children in Jesus name. Amen.
Long before I became a father, I made some important commitments towards my children. I promised to be there for them all the way. I made a commitment to invest my time into their lives. And I can testify that I have seen tremendous benefits of the commitments, which I also call time investment in the lives of my children.
As the head of the family, you must realize that your children are your seeds. They came from your loins. So it is very important for you to appreciate that your greatest investment into them is not the money in your bank accounts. It is also not the properties you have built for them. It is not even in the quality of secular education that you give them. Your greatest investment is the quality of time you invest into their lives at their young age and unto their adult life. From our main text today, particularly verse 7, the Bible has this to say, and you shall whet and sharpen them so as to make penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the minds and hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up (Deut.6:7). From this Bible passage, you would note that you have no excuse to give for not having time for your children.
As the head of the family and the father of your children, you must keep investing your time into the lives of your children. And that is what your children understand as love. That is when you connect and bond with them in every aspect of their lives. To love your children is more than taking them to amusement parks or restaurants or sending them on vacations abroad. If you sincerely love your children, you must dedicate your time into their lives.
But how do I invest my time in my children notwithstanding my busy schedules? Your quality time investment could be that five minutes you have with them at dinner or when you drive them to school or church. It could just be that ten minutes of your time that you spend with them asking about their school work, their dreams and ambitions. It is during those moments of your interaction with them that you teach and impress on them the principles, values and precepts in the word of God. The Word of God is the power of God that can keep your children from the corruption of this generation. You must be like the wise farmer, who jealously guards and invests his time to ensure that the seeds he has planted grow and develop into fruitful harvest.
As the father and the person God has given the responsibility to train your children in the way and admonition of the Lord (Eph.6:4), you must continue to make time for your children. You must deliberately spend time with them and make it worthwhile because that is what they will remember most. Remember that you are ordained to be the good and godly father. Make it count positively in the lives of your children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me the wisdom to allocate my time for my children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me how to manage my time and my life to make the most of my existence as a father.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to make the most of my calling as a father.
I have made up my mind to invest my scarce time into the lives of my wife and children because that is what secures my heritage as a good and godly father in Jesus Name. Amen.
