Bible Texts: Mk.13:36-37, Am.6:1, 2Cor.5:17, Jn.3:3-4, Pro.4:23, Ezk.2:2, Pro.23:7, Matt.6:22, Hab.2:1, 1Pet.5:8

I have come to discover that it is very easy for the husbandman to fall into error. I have also observed that the ministry of the husbandman demands consistent watchfulness in order for him to escape the traps of satan, sin and the world. This why in Mark Gospel chapter 13, Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman, admonishes you and I to be watchful.

Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh at even or at midnight or at the cockcrowing or in the morning. Lest coming suddenly he find sleeping. And what I say unto you I say to unto all, watch (Mk.13:35-37)

As the husbandman, you cannot afford to be careless with the words that come from your mouth or the thoughts that crosses your mind. In all things and in everything that you think, do or say, you must exercise watchfulness.

But how do I maintain watchfulness?

Guard your heart your heart with all diligence.

Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life (Pro.4:23)

As the husbandman, you must watch the information that you receive. This includes the books you read, the films you watch and the messages you listen to. The information you receive into your spirit man determines and influences the quality of the action you take. As a man thinks in his heart so is he (Pro.23:7). You are only as good as you think and you cannot act better than what you think.

Engage the Person of the Holy Spirit by the weapon of prayer.

I will send the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, who will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things you need to know (Jn.14:26)

The Person of the Holy Spirit has two important ministries to you. He teaches and guides. As you ask for His help and truthfully so in prayers, He will teach you what you need to know; He will reveal to you what is not obvious, helping you to discern right from wrong; and He will guide you in the way that you should go, think and act.

However, you must recognize that the foundation to maintaining watchfulness is new birth. That is being born again by water and spirit and having a quality relationship with God through the Person of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (Jn.3:3-7, 2Cor.5:17). You must be born again and give attention to the study, meditation and action of God’s word. You must love God through Jesus Christ with the whole of your heart, might, soul and body by doing only those things that please Him.

Stand on the watchtower. Watch and pray that you fall not into temptation.

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from spiritual complacency and careless living.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, lead me away from ungodly influences and associations.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to be prayerful and watchful.

I stand upon my watch and I maintain continued watchfulness over what I read, hear and listen to so that the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart will be acceptable in the sight of God and profitable to my wife and children because that is what gives me value as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
