Bible Texts: Gen.16:6-7, Matt.11:28, Matt.26:45, Jer.30:17
Your servant is in your hands, Abram said. Do with her whatsoever you think best. Then Sarai mistreated Hagar, so she fled from her. The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert. It was the spring that is beside the road to Shur (Gen.16:6-7)
The story in our main text today was that of Hagar, the mistress of Abraham. After waiting for so many years without a child, Sarah, the wife of Abraham offered her husband her maid so that she can bear a child for her husband. After Hagar was delivered of her son, Ishmael, trouble began in the house. Sarah couldn’t tolerate her maid anymore so she sent her packing out of the house into the desert. But while in the desert, the angel of the Lord found her near a fountain of water.
The fountain provided the lifeline that she and her son needed to survive. That is what you represent in the lives of your wife and children. You are that spring of water which provides strength, hope and faith for them. Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husband, was an oasis of love to His disciples. When Peter’s mother-in-law was sick with fever, Jesus healed her. When satan had concluded plans to influence Peter to deny Jesus, He prayed for Him. There was a time when the disciples had struggled all day in their fishing adventure but caught nothing. But when Jesus appeared on the scene, they caught so much fish that their net began to break.
As the head of your family, you are an oasis of love. The Scripture says of Jesus, come unto me all ye that labour and heavy laden and I will give you rest (Matt.11:28). Your wife and children should find rest in you. They must find satisfaction in you. They must find strength in you. They must find hope in you. They must experience all of the nature of Jesus Christ in you. Jesus gave an open invitation to everyone who needed help. Be like Him to your flock. Be all of Jesus to them. That is your honour as a good and godly husbandman.
Hallelujah!
