Main Scriptures: Ps.111:5
More Scriptures: Ps.112:2, Gen.2:5, Eph.5:25
As the head of your family and the spiritual authority in your home, have you thought about the benefits you will enjoy if you truly obey all that God commands you to do as the man, husband and father? Do you know that the quickest way to be in charge of your sheepfold is to be obedient to all of God’s commandments? By the grace of God, today’s devotional will help you to see that the obedient husbandman is always a blessed shepherd.
He hath given meat unto them that fear him, he will ever be mindful of his covenant (Ps.111:5).
The Scripture says that if you fear the Lord, He will not only give you meat, He will never forget His blessings that come from the covenant of the shepherd and the sheepfold. But what does it mean to fear the Lord? It simply means to do what He commands you to do. It is not about one huge man holding a very big stick to flog you. There are instructions that God has given to you to obey. As the man, there are commandments. As the husband, there are also commandments. And as the father, there are commandments. These commandments are not hidden and they are not also conditional. For instance, as the godly man, God wants you to work the ground, that is He wants you to be productive by engaging your hands and mind. And God did not send rain on the earth because there was no man to till the earth (Gen2:5). So, if you work hard and bring your harvest home thereby providing for your wife and children, then you are sure on your way to becoming the blessed husband (1Tim.5:7-8). Your capacity to provide for your family is not dependent on whether you like their faces or not, whether they like you or not, or whether they obey you or not. Just provide. That is your duty and solely yours. It is not a shared responsibility between you and your wife or children. You are their shepherd and they are your sheep. The dignity of the shepherd is built on the truth that he provides for his sheep (Ps.23:2-3).
Take another one for example. As the godly husband, God commands you to love your wife as Christ has loved the church. Husbands, love your wife as Christ has loved the church (Eph.5:25). The Scripture also says that husbands must love their wife and not be bitter against them. This love is not conditional. It doesn’t recognize age, class, education, height and colour. In fact, it is independent of what your wife does or does not do to you. Just love her, irrespective of her weaknesses. This is the power of God that destroys hate and unforgiveness. It is a choice you have to make and all that this kind of love contains is in 1Cor.13:4-8. Furthermore, because love of Christ is the nature of God, you can win your wife over again and again to your side.
