As we round up this series, I have no doubt in my spirit that you have been empowered by the Holy Ghost to become an effective godly shepherd. Today, let us look at the last wisdom key to leading your wife and children effectively. It is by being involved in the lives of your sheep. Jesus Christ never left His disciples alone. He got involved in the things they did and so He understood their personality- their strength and weaknesses.
A lot of the times as husbandmen, we make the mistake of thinking that after we have provided all that our sheep need-shelter, accommodation, good education, money to spend, vacation- that is all there is. And this mind set has created a gap between us and our sheep. It has also made it difficult to understand who our sheep are thus leading to constant fight. The question is this. How much are you involved in the things that concern your wife and children? How much do you know about your children’s education? How much do you know of their friends? How much do you know about their visions for life? How much do you know about your wife’s spiritual needs? How much do you know of her emotional needs and fears? You cannot answer these questions until you have invested yourself into the lives of your sheep.
But how do I get involved in the lives of my sheep so that I can understand them and lead them effectively? Firstly, you must learn to communicate with them, irrespective of the offence they may have committed against you. And this involves asking your sheep the right questions and be willing and ready to answer their questions. So, you must not allow bitterness, unforgiveness and hatred to get between you and your sheep. Secondly, you make out time to ask from your sheep how they would want you to help them. Don’t assume for that they don’t need you. You have to consciously and deliberately offer yourself to your sheep, notwithstanding the number of times they reject you. Thirdly, you must demonstrate that they can trust you with their success, strength, pains and fears. If your wife and children do not trust that you will protect their inadequacies, they will resist your offer to be involved in their lives. If they know that you will exploit their weakness to abuse and embarrass them, they will shut their doors against you. So, you have a responsibility to earn their trust and confidence.
As you walk your way to be involved in their lives, the Person of the Holy Spirit will reveal to you the areas where your sheep needs help. He will also teach you how to pray with them and for them. The blessing you enjoy include joy, peace, strength and above all, you become fully in charge of your sheep and your sheepfold. And the name of Jesus Christ shall be glorified in your life, your sheep and your sheepfold.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from the spirit of unforgiveness, bitterness and hatred working in me against my sheep.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me a mouth and a wisdom that my sheep shall not be able to resist.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give my sheep the heart to receive me as their shepherd.
FAITH CONFESSION
I offer myself to my wife and children as their leader and shepherd so that I can learn of their lives and help them succeed because that is what makes me the good and godly husband in Jesus name. Amen.
