WORK! WORK!! WORK!!!
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to device cunning works, to work in gold and in silver and in brass and in cutting of stones, to set them and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship. (Ex.31:3-5).
The second priority is work. Yes. Work! Work is the heritage of the godly husbandman. Work is the pride of the husbandman. Work is the dignity of the husbandman. God wants you to work with your mind and your hands. Infact, there is no future for a lazy shepherd. Sadly, there are many husbandmen who have decided not to work with their hands. Many more who claim they are working are not engaging their full potential in their work.
Let us consider the following Scriptures from the word of God concerning work. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for there is no work or device in the grave.. (Ecc.9:10). Notice something very interesting in this verse of the Bible. It says, “whatever your hands find to do”. This is what it implies. While you are waiting for that exotic and luxurious and prestigious work, get something doing. Do not fold your hands. Get engaged! Get to work! It is more dignifying that you are out there working legitimately than just sit down at home and give all the excuses in the world. It doesn’t matter how small the work is, get your hand on the plow and work because there is dignity in work. More importantly, God is a worker. Jesus Christ is a worker. And you are made in their image and likeness and you have their mind (Gen.1:26-28)
But why must I work as the shepherd? Firstly, work is a proof of responsibility. When you work, it shows that you have taken responsibility to provide for your life and the lives of your wife and children. For when we were with you, we gave you this rule. If a man will not work, he shall not east. We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy, they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat (2Thess.3:10-12) NIV. Secondly, God blesses you through the work of your hands. And observe what the Lord your God requires. Walk in His ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, SO THAT YOU MAY PROSPER IN ALL YOU DO and wherever you go (1Kgs.2:3). Your work is the principal channel through which God blesses and prospers. In Psalms chapter 1, the word of God says that whatever you lay your hands to do shall prosper. God wants to prosper you but you must show Him your work.
There is dignity in work. Put your mind and hands to work because that is what makes you the good and godly shepherd to your wife and children and the market place of life.
