Bible Texts: Heb.12:5-13, Ps.23:1, Jn.10:27, Pro.8:20, Matt.7:5
Today’s topic may sound insulting to some husbandmen because it touches on their ego. But the truth remains that if you have not learnt how to lead yourself, you will struggle to lead your wife and children. I pray that the grace to receive God’s word into your spirit to the extent that you will be transformed as the good and godly husbandman to your sheep will be given to you. I pray that you will open your heart to listen to the instructions God through the Person of the Holy Spirit will be communicating to you.
My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him, for whom the Lord loves He chastens and scourges every son whom he receives….. NOW NO CHASTENING SEEMS TO BE JOYFUL FOR THE PRESENT, BUT PAINFUL; NEVERTHELESS, AFTERWARD IT YIELDS THE PEACEABLE FRUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED BY IT (Heb.12:5-13) NKJV.
Let me quote the text by Dr. John Maxwell, from his book, “John Maxwell Leadership Bible”. He says, “People follow leaders primarily because they see life they believe they can trust and one they want to emulate”. So, let’s interrogate ourselves as heads of our families and as the good and godly shepherds to see if we are fit to be called leaders to our sheep.
Does your wife see a life and future with you? Can your children trust you? Can your wife and children trust you enough to emulate you? If truly neither your wife nor your children can see a life and future with or trust you as someone they can emulate, then they will never follow you. They will seek for alternative. So, the master key to making your sheep to follow you is to learn to lead yourself first because you cannot give what you don’t have.
But how do I lead myself to be able to lead my wife and children? For your wife to follow you, you must craft a God-given, future looking vision for your wife and yourself, your home and your children as well as your journey to eternity. For your children, let you conduct towards God, their mother and those around you reflect righteousness, decency, honour, respect, obedience, submission, commitment, diligence, service, sacrifice, hope and faith. Are you ready to lead yourself?
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me how to lead myself.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to lead my wife and children by example.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help my wife and children to follow my leading.
FAITH CONFESSION
I exercise myself in the truth of God’s word to lead myself in order to lead my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
