If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it, but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always helpful and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever. (1Cor.13:3-8) NLT
In the next few days, by the help of my Teacher, the Person of the Holy Spirit, we shall be looking at the manner of love God wants you to give to your and you can grow and develop this love nature. So, to help you understand the nature of the love you are to extend to your wife, I will use the analogy of the gearing system of a car.
Typically, a car has between 4 and 5 gear selections. When you start the car and set it in motion, you are most likely to select gear 1. And as you progress, you move to gear 2 and so on. Thankfully, it is the driver and not the passengers who initiates and operates the gear action. And that is who you are as the good and godly shepherd-the driver. And this implies that you are the one to love your wife and not the other way. Husbands, love thy wife as Christ loved the Church…….(Eph.5:25, Col.3:9). And your love for your wife must be steady and progressive.
Now, the person who determines how far and fast the family would go in the atmosphere of Christ’s love is not your wife or children. It is YOU. Neither your wife nor children can decide which gear position you can stay on. If you look at Gen.2:15-18, God created the planets and animals. And when God had completed creating everything-the finished environment, He handed it over to the man- Adam, the husband- to keep and tend (Gen.2:15-18). Then, He made the wife-Eve. You are a man of influence, power and impact. God empowered you and He gave you the whole destinies of your wife and children to care for, intentionally, by loving them as He would.
As the head of your family and the spiritual leader in your sheepfold, you are representing Jesus Christ and the Fatherhood nature of God to your wife and children. Having set the foundation for the teaching series, what then is the nature of the godly husband’s love to his wife and how does he manifest it for the good of his wife, children and family?
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to engage my spirit, soul and body to love my wife as You would.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, save me from every force that wants to make me act foolishly and unlovingly to my wife.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me how to always demonstrate the love of Jesus to my wife.
FAITH CONFESSION
I engage and extend the love of Christ in me to my wife because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
